Fantasy Concepts: An OGL Fantasy Saga Project

I agree with all these ideas. If Smite and Turn Undead use action points they'll need to be more powerful. Perhaps you can Smite after you know if you hit and you automatically turn undead without a skill check? Presumably you had to spend a slot (feat or talent) on the special ability and...

Advanced Character Class Congratulations, to all, on the agreed cooperation between Samardan Press and Big Finger Games for this project. Yes they should be included; I love advanced and prestige classes. :o The books presented prestige classes have been, by far and away, the best selling...

Fantasy Concepts: An OGL Fantasy Saga Project

Flynn has to put his time and money on the line since he'll be releasing something for a fee. Ultimately the choices are made by one person. I agree that we're not going to succeed as a committee. Hopefully the dialectic we engage in here, publicly, will give Flynn a good idea of...

Fantasy Concepts: An OGL Fantasy Saga Project

I do want to model Dungeons & Dragons (and fantasy heavily-influenced by D&D) but I agree with your list of classes. Warrior, Scoundrel, Scout, Noble, Mage, and Priest. All classes (under Saga) share the Talent and Bonus Feat features. Individual choices within those allow each class...

Fantasy Concepts: An OGL Fantasy Saga Project

Vs. D20 Heroic Classes I favor pleasing D20 Modern fans but let's please avoid mapping our character classes 1:1 to the six attributes. A character class is dull when it is an expression of only one of Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma. :uhoh: Each character...

    2007 ENnies Nominees - announced!

Yes, Wizards of the Coast should participate. Despite appearances I'm not here to dump on this thread. Scott, your response is exactly why I posted. Thanks. I know that Wizards of the Coast isn't nominated because Wizards of the Coast chose not to submit their stuff. I disagree...

    D&D Computer Games

Since no one answered... Q: What is goodwill? A: When one company acquires another they have the price they paid and the accounting value of all the tangible assets which were bought. Say Infogrames paid $100 million for the Atari acquisition. Atari's office buildings, insurance policies...

Fantasy Concepts: An OGL Fantasy Saga Project

Class Theories There is a balance between "very flexible and generic" and "flavorful and easy to grok". Dungeons & Dragons v.3.5 now has a large number of base classes (in which you can begin your 1st level adventuring career). Cramming all those classes or at least those concepts into...

Saga Links I highly recommend everyone read the following so that we can have an informed and meaningful discussion: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/SagaPreview1 - Classes and character creation http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/SagaPreview2 - Skill...

    2007 ENnies Nominees - announced!

The ENnies lose all credibility when no Dungeons & Dragons products by Wizards of the Coast are involved. The InQuest Gamer magazine has a decent solution to the problem of a dominant game dominating the awards. InQuest has a category for Best Magic Expansion so that Magic: the Gathering...

Fantasy Concepts: An OGL Fantasy Saga Project

Saga Skill System The massively simplified skill list (above referred to as "consolidated") and no skill points is one of the most important innovations of Saga rules. Spending skill points each level and tracking ranks bought at class versus cross class rates is annoying for multi-class...

    Keith Baker on Eberron's Theme

I think Wizards of the Coast pumps up the pulp because it's more accessible to younger players. Bill Slavicsek added the dinosaur element to Eberron because tons and tons of other submissions (out of 10,000+) in the contest included dinosaurs. :D If so many people submitted ideas with...

    D&D Computer Games

If Atari/Infogrames go out of business Wizards of the Coast would presumably get the rights back to Dungeons & Dragons video games. Gleemax could take off if it was the exclusive access to a new version of D&D Online.

Unearthed Arcana - Which rules do you use regularly?

I forgot to mention above that I also use, and like, fractional BAB and saves. Multi-class characters are already punished enough so that they don't need to take another hit on BAB. Saves can get crazy with multi-class jumps for each 1st level in a class. :D

Unearthed Arcana - Which rules do you use regularly?

I use "Weapon Group Feats" in every campaign where I have any influence at all. It has really led to flavorful weapon choices instead of Longsword versus Rapier choices. I've tried "Gestalt Characters" a couple times. My favorite use for these rules is for high-LA games. That way the...

    Long-term planning for D&D characters

Remove prerequisites. Change the mechanics so that multiclassing is fun instead of giving up on equal power with single class characters. Star Wars: Saga Edition looks like it _might_ be a move in this direction.

    Running clerics as spiritual counselors?

Roleplaying between player characters usually uses almost no mechanical rules. This is probably more true for intra-party play than any other element of Dungeons & Dragons. I think every game I've ever played in had a golden rule that PCs couldn't use skill checks to force other PCs to change...

    Alternative origins of the drow

In my game elves are closely related to fey. Drow, on the other hand, aren't related to elves or fey at all. The drow were created as their own race just like humans, dwarves, centaurs, orcs, and halflings. :uhoh:
