D&D 5E Things from other games that are unlikely to be put into NEXT that you will port over

D20 Wheel of Time spellcasting (aka channeling).

    Nethermancer

The more I think about the hits and misses of 4th edition the more I think that long lists of classes is a better solution. Trying to fit builds of Warlocks where some were Con-based and some were Cha-based didn't work very well. For one thing, in the character builder I had to keep looking at...

Kits vs. Prestige Classes vs. Racial Variants

Start a new poll! Or if you provide the list of poll options I'll set it up for you. :) For some that say themes are the answer...I like kits but so far I'm not excited by the vision that is being portrayed of themes.

    Revisioning Tiers

Both polls here on EN World and Wizards of the Coast employees indicate that people don't play above 12th level. I wrote a blog about it here. Don't build the "feel" of the level range into the game. Some people want the feel of dirt farmer and some don't but the game mechanics don't need to...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

Monsters in 'Combat as War' fights are scaled differently than they are in 'Combat as Sport' fights which seems to be forgotten in some of the discussion. If the enemies are too powerful to just go toe to toe with, that is what makes the players stop, think, and use 'Combat as War' tactics...

Character Actor, Power Gamer, Storyteller, and Thinker

While I like Venn diagrams, they're a little harder to do with 4 options than with 3.

Which core races have you played?

Would goliath fare better if it were called half-giant?

    Individuality and Teamwork in D&D

4e produces the same results if you build your character based on what is fun to play rather than what the party "needs". For example, I asked the players in our group to skip playing a leader (I had played a leader previously) but I was unable to convince them that it wasn't "mandatory" to...

    D&D 5E What will 5E's defining sub-system be?

Seconded. Add in skills as an innovation sitting sorta between 2e and 3e. Didn't 1e have prestige classes with the old school bard or druid where you had to multiclass/dual-class first in order to make the prerequisites to get into the class?

    D&D 5E Visions of 5e

Specializations within sources overall and specifically Martial specializations called "Styles" sounds cool. A thought I had never considered. Smart idea to draw on specialist Wizards and mirror that innovation elsewhere. I would like to see a dwarf-training character class as well as Elf and...

D&D 5E D&D Next Blog - A Close Call with Negative Hit Points

So far the two winning options are essentially the same. Either healing always starts from zero or hit points never go below zero (therefore healing always starts at zero). Is this a commentary on mathematics? Negative numbers are annoying? Note: I voted to remove negative hit points from the...

How High Level Should the Core Book Go?

From the core rules fundamentals, the game should be designed to naturally support thirty (30) levels of play. This means that rules for levels 1-30 should be released at the launch of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. If, because of space & page count considerations, they don't have room for all...

    Spells/Powers Becoming Obsolete With Level

Actually, spells become obsolete in 4e in another way. If you like the effect of a 1st level daily but you're 30th level that 1st level daily is clearly under-powered compared to the "best" dailies you could access. Sometimes, however, there was no equivalent effect scaled to the power level of...

    D&D 5E The OGL -- A Lesson for 5E

I've made similar points. See "Licensed To Have Fun". There was a lot of poor quality, third-party product that hurt hobby stores because those small businesses didn't know how to handle the influx & change in the industry but it eventually worked itself out.

    Race "roles"

Races felt pigeon-holed in 4e. If you wanted to play certain races you would be noticeably worse than other characters if you chose classes that didn't align with at least one and sometimes both of your stat bonuses. Races were more pigeon-holed than "combat roles". Part of the problem is a...

Poll - which classes have you played.

I found this poll very difficult to answer and I also find the results hard to interpret. My 2e psionicist who could transform various body parts into those of a Giant Eagle felt very different than 4e (or even 3e) psions. Do I select Psion or Other?

Uniting the Editions, Part 2 Up!

To me, the idea that each character would have a different approach to builds is a little odd but I can easily imagine how it would work. 1. Even in 3e, each skill is a group of "related activities" that you're trained at doing. 2. Each choice (ability checks, 3e skills, 4e skills, &c) is a...

    Timmy, Johnny, Spike, and Vorthos

The map isn't perfect anyway because of Vorthos. I'd say Vorthos is "Story Now" and, yes, Spike is Gamist. That leaves both Johnny and Timmy as Simulationist. Timmy could be a little Gamist as well. Purity isn't important.
