The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

I think for me the question is one of game mechanics. If the rules say something can be done, then we accept it as believable (whether it is or not). However, realism runs afoul of game mechanics. Take standard initiative. Let's say there are ten PCs with 30' move. If one picks up a stick and...

The Difference Between Realism vs. Believability

Great example. I've always hated that one myself. Is this unrealistic or unbelievable? I thought the heart of most objection to 4e was that it was "dumbed down" and "made for kids". :)(Sorry I cut off the rest of your well-thought post)

    Glitterdust: A DM's ruling

I don't really agree with this ruling by the DM, but I just thought I would throw this out there if anyone wants to discuss it. The Setup: My latest group, like every group I have ever played with or met, used the idea that if a person is Glitterduested then reapplying Invisibility negated it...

Roleplaying dilemma - what would you do?

The Resolution Well, I don't know if anyone really cares but here was the resolution (sort of). I am suspecting the player ('T'), who was actively ignoring the necro-assassin ('V') to help him out, realized he had been metagaming over the week hiatus. Likewise, I believe the DM began to have...

Roleplaying dilemma - what would you do?

Normally I might agree with you. However, with this group, they usually are very good at metagaming vs. gaming. In fact, unlike most groups, the DM rarely ever takes a player aside to tell him something; usually it's up front but we 'ignore' that we know it. So, I knew for a fact that none of...

    Tumble Skill help

I'm thinking it does. PH p.163 bottom left: " To make a skill check, roll 1d20 ..." so "check separately for each opponent" = "roll 1d20 for each opponent" Doesn't mean I like it, though. One problem I have with it is the idea of diminishing returns, that is the more rolls required the more...

    Tumble Skill help

Even when the right rule is known, the DM gets to decide:D!

    D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Pet-Less Ranger Variant

I applaud the idea of being pet-free (in my worlds, players don't ride horses but use "magical shoes" so I don't have to kill horses) but aren't you making it a little too powerful? Especially, from what I've seen, a ranger's pet has less and less impact at higher levels.

    D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Attacking Your Own Square

Yeah, Frank, you're right. I meant to mention this earlier but forgot. Per PH, p. 128: "A Fine, Diminutive, or Tiny creature can move into or through an occupied square. The creature provokes attacks of opportunity when doing so." Yet technically, on the same page (above it): "You can’t end...

Roleplaying dilemma - what would you do?

As the Jester said, that is a player problem. He is not playing Chaotic Evil, he is playing Chaotic Stupid! (BTW, the PC in my post is playing that too, IMO) Many people have trouble understanding how to play evil. That is actually fortunate for us in the RW. They think it means killing...

Roleplaying dilemma - what would you do?

That is correct. I intentionally had my character overcompensate and cast Greater Dispel Magic which revealed the other player. As to anti-social, etc.: please remember that I am the one with the new player, not him. In addition, the player fit perfectly in with the scoundrels and was, in...

    D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Attacking Your Own Square

    1) It would seem the answer is yes, though I'll let someone else provide the definitive word. Do remember though, if you occupy the same space you DO provoke an AoO if you range attack. 2) Yes, at the standard -4 to hit to avoid hitting an ally. You probably know this but look at p.149 of the...

    Are gamers chronic loners

I'm in two groups right now: In the older (30-45) group, 3 of us are married, one is soon to be and the other isn't. In the younger (18-20), 2 are married (to each other) and 3 are not.

    New DM

Also remember: The DM is GOD. Her final decision is that - final. However, try to be a fair god. I will warn you that the players might try to test you by seeing how far you will go. Don't be afraid to screw them but don't go out of your way to do it. As in the above water example, let them...

Roleplaying dilemma - what would you do?

I will try to give all the relevant info (and hopefully ward off the nitpickers). Last year, I joined a group of players who had been playing together for 10+years. Setup: In this 3.5 world, we were playing a scoundrels campaign whose objective was to take over the criminal organization of a...

    XP for roleplay/social accomplishments

You shouldn't get any flak for that. For one, the key word was GOOD roleplaying. I've been in worlds where the DM thought roleplaying meant spending four hours outfitting your character.

    XP for roleplay/social accomplishments

For years I tried a variety of methods, straight xp for monsters, time-based, etc. but nothing really encouraged role-playing that much. I then began a tedious process of giving players +/- ticks for roleplaying as the game progressed and it helped out quite a bit. (When I say roleplaying, part...

Hide vs. Detect spells and the like

Unfortunately, it doesn't (specifically hide vs. AS), which was why I posted this. I'm just trying to see what people think. As I said on the other thread, the RAW seems to indicate that a successful hide check would block sight, therefore AS wouldn't work (but a DM would). I just can't get the...

Hide vs. Detect spells and the like

Ironwolf, I am completely embarrassed. You picked up on the one word that several of us in RL had completely missed: "sparkle". Now that I'm rereading the spell and actually reading "sparkle" in there, I have to admit you are right. Sometimes us old-timers are so set in our ways, I think we...
