It's Not the GM's Job to Make Sure People Have Fun

It all depends on definitions. "Fun" moment to moment? Or fun over the long haul? A fun campaign can have many down, unfun, and even depressing moments. Hell, I'd say campaign HAS to have those moments in order to be fun.

    The Easter Eggs

Yes, but they are not references to anything but the campaign world and there is no tangible benefit. First of all, it may be helpful to understand now that I'm on my 4th campaign in Eberron and each has started at the same date. The players know that the events that happened in previous...

Death Frost Doom - too lethal?

I thought I'd follow up with a post-game report. 5 PCs, all 3rd level started the night. 1 made it home. In the end, after a 90 minute brilliant debate about it, they rejected the deal. In the ensuing chaos, two fled and got away through invisibility, a potion of gaseous form, and flight...

    What Monster(s) are Overexposed?

I picked Drow. Frankly, all of the the others can be used well, even if it is rare, but I haven't seen a drow in years that doesn't make me want to roll my eyes.

Death Frost Doom - too lethal?

Zak - it was your current city siege events that got me to want to run DFD. I loved how something that could happen at such a low level could be so world-altering. It's a far cry from ye olde rats in the basement of the towne inn.

Death Frost Doom - too lethal?

I first heard about it from Zak from the DND with Porn Stars blog. It's seriously old school (save vs poison or die, many curses, etc), but it has a great flow and feel. It's designed for AD&D but since the stats are minimal to non-existent, it really doesn't matter. (It will note a 6HD wight...

Death Frost Doom - too lethal?

I'm running Death Frost Doom this Friday in my Eberron/Pathfinder campaign and I'm a bit concerned about the lethality of it. I'm pulling it out at a last minute to fill a hole in our gaming schedule since I didn't have any standard stuff prepared and I've thought about a killer way it will...

How long have you been married?

14 years of marriage and we dated for 5 years before that. Been a very, very long time! :)

    Enchanted Items terms

"Standard-enchantment" seems like an oxymoron, doesn't it? All enchantment should be non-standard.

    Moral Gray Areas...

Yeah, I think you need to be upfront with them about the type of campaign it's going to be. If someone comes up with a paladin, a honor-obsessed knight, or a goody-goody cleric they will NOT have fun. Give them a preview of the campaign, something dark and seedy. A few short paragraphs about...

    SMALLVILLE #21:Salvation/Season *ENDING* 9/2010

We got suit. Ok, it was a blurry dream sequence (Jimmy Olsen? He's dead! Lex for President? Yes!) and then in a reflection in Clark's eyes, but it was the suit. I'm happy the Kandorian thing is done and I liked seeing Clark kick some butt in a non-superpowered fight. Overall, not a bad...

    It's dead Jim. Heroes.

Heroes suffered from poor writing, some of the worst I've seen. I stuck through all of the episodes and was frequently ashamed to admit I watched it. Sylar, season 1, was an EXCELLENT villain. Why did they screw with that? They should have either, a) let him die at the end of season 1, or b)...

Ever let players run the opposition?

Not as much with a turned-undead PC, but when a PC dies I'll often toss a monster character sheet at the player and have them play the monster. Let me tell you, they are WAY more killer and brutal than I am as a DM. Give a player a chance to fight the other players and there is no mercy.

Nuclear Explosion [weapon] in Space - result?

One note on the thought of diverting an asteroid with nukes...if it isn't an iron asteroid (many are rock or dust), you risk shattering it, which doesn't help a bit. If you have a 1,000,000 ton single impactor or 1000 1000-ton impactors, the energy and thus destructive power is still the same...

How important are demons/devils to D&D?

I find them important for a big "I'M EVIL" sign. I tend to run morally gray campaigns where the innkeeper is cheating customers, the priest is sleeping with the women in the congregation, and even the local baker is running a prostitution ring. The PCs are used to seeing evil-lite in all of...

    Combat Classes

It all depends on your play style. Some are bored with melee combat. I enjoy it, especially once you get the improved CMB feats, or mobility/spring attack, or vital strike...there are a lot of options out there. 3.5 - a 7th level fighter full attacks (rather than trying to look up the rules...

    Best Cult Themed Adventure?

There is one from Dungeon, "The Last Breaths of Ashenport." It is designed with a more aquatic lovecraftian theme, but the atmosphere and mystery are excellent.

    Which "new" adventures are classics?

I have a hard time judging since I've never see or played any of these. Gaming has changed for me in 20+ years...where back in the day we bought the modules and played them to death. These days we rarely do modules, if ever. I will sometimes grab a short adventure and rip it apart to put into...
