Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

Think of levels 1-2 as the tutorial. That said, I've slowed down progression at every PC level in my 5e campaign.

    Star Trek: Section 31

But the 1980s Spielberg came through loud and clear in Skeleton Crew, which is what they were shooting for. It’s the promised Spielberg Star Wars movie we never got.

David Lynch: RIP and Ranked (A Celebration)

I’d probably swap Lost Highway and Inland Empire but otherwise this works for me. Wait, where’s The Elephant Man?

Streaming services, which do you have or are you getting rid of?

Current annual subs: Prime Video (as part of Amazon Prime) Paramount+ (they made me a deal I couldn't refuse - a year of commercial-free Star Trek for $60) Max (got a decent deal through Amex) Currently on rotation: Hulu + Disney+ (for Shōgun, Interior Chinatown, and Skeleton Crew) ESPN+ (will...

How important is it to you or your players for characters to feel "overpowered"?

Do I expect the A-Team to run though a hail of bullets and come out unscathed? Yes. Do I expect Fafrhd and the Grey Mouser to kick in a door without a plan and win a fight while outnumbered 20 to 1? Yes. Do I expect Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice to survive either of the above scenarios? No.

Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

Agreed. I think it's one of the finest hours of television drama. Do you mean the new movie (again, haven't watched it yet) or Section 31 in general? I like the idea of Section 31. Even utopias can use a morally suspect intelligence outfit. For example, Iain Banks's Culture, which is the...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Is Almost Upon Us! Discuss What You Want

I want to know how they bridge the gap between their xenomorph Gorn and TOS’s lovable Disco Sleestak Gorn who Kirk extends mercy towards. It’ll be a neat trick. I think they can pull it off. But I admit after Captain Batel was revealed to be infected, I’d be fine with the Metrons giving the...

Star Trek and Idealism vs cynicism

I loved it when it was Ben Sisko erasing his personal log. I haven’t seen the new movie yet. But let me say I think the cynicism of new Trek has been vastly overstated and the idealism of old Trek has been somewhat overstated. My introduction to Trek was TOS. A show about a crew of killers...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

True, I was going by this text from the PHB, "Elves have the ability to see into the infro-red spectrum, so they are able to see up to 60' in darkness, noting varying degrees of heat radiation." Of course the DMG takes the perfectly clear "... see up to 60ft in darkness... " and complicates it...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Several demi-human races in the 1978 AD&D Player's Handbook had infravision, ie, the ability to see up to 60ft in darkness. OK, so 47 years. Did elves not see in the dark in OD&D? Now I'm curious if that changed from the very 1st version.

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

"Common feature that has been in the game for 50 years ruins game that's endured for 50 years" is always going to be a hard argument to make.

D&D (2024) How Important Is The Lore

I voted ‘take it or leave it’ because it’s valuable to some folks and, admittedly, it might be interesting. But my gut reaction these days is to despise any use of the word ‘lore’ that is not referring to Data’s evil twin brother.
