How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

By level 10, the wizard has +5 base attack over the warrior's +1. So he can use non proficient weapons almost as well as well as the warrior can use his proficient weapons (seeing as how the warrior is more likely to have a str bonus). And the wizard will be better at attacking any weapons...

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

Well, you aren't ripping out bits of your soul and using them to empower the desks, are you?

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

I've never seen wizard happy to live with an unmodified d4 HD. In 3.x, we generally expected wizards to derive at least as HP from CON (especially at higher levels) and other HP gains than from raw HD.

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

Of course it will be when you make it stupid. OTOH, if the author works backwards, deciding what he wants to have happen and then making up rules to support that, it should be reasonably consistent. It's just as arbitrary though.

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

Similarly, giving the fighter a limited subset of mundane skills, while giving spellcasters potential mastery of almost all magic. While missing specific spells - other really good specific spells - there was a lot of overlap in the types of spells they have. When you look at the casters...

    Pretty much just playing SC2.

I like magic as a science, and also favor magic stuff being specific Proper Nouns.

The pleasure in RPGs - alternatives to overcoming challenges

It's not that I don't enjoy challenge based play, but some sources of challenge just don't seem very interesting to me. I mean, real people die from badly planned and organized wilderness expeditions - but that doesn't mean I want to spend 2 hours in the game buying tons of supplies before we...

Has the Vancian Magic Thread Burned Down the Forest Yet? (My Bad, People)

Gosh, I wonder who that hurts more? Casters who already have magic they've picked and want to fill in the gaps, or other characters whose magic comes ONLY from items.

Fun vs. Reality: a false dichotomy?

I think he's way off base. Eurogames tend to do pretty well with largely bolted on themes. It's a nice bonus when they do, but the core is manipulating the game stuff so you get points. Or other games too - like Monopoly. There are like a zillion different versions of Monopoly, and mechanics...

Actual play examples - balance between fiction and mechanics

I strongly disagree. Wide variance in difficulty or rewards based on player strategy doesn't preserve the value and meaning of player choice, it destroys that value - essentially, you create a single correct choice. In a sort of in combat sense, think of 3e giants. They have pretty good stuff...

    Essentials feat too powerful???

The impact of Superior Will can also come from monster powers where saves cascade. For example, in one encounter, there were two Yochol Tempters. The character with Superior Will has to fail 2 saves (the bonus save, and then the normal save) to become stunned, so besides the initial defense...

Need help to understand Corrosion power (M&M 2nd edition)

Yeah, a Drain removing 4 power points of toughness would reduce impervious toughness by 2 ranks.

    Essentials feat too powerful???

The absolute effect of the feat doesn't seem that important compared the impact of the feat relative to similar means of accomplishing the same goal within the system. If the other ways to get start of turn saves are epic feats or being a warden, then something similar available from level 1...

The Crazy Character RPG Equation: Which Side of the Screen?

What mean? For instance, in terms of mentality, a weird looking creature with roughly human lifespan and drives seems closer to us than a pretty elf who lives for a 1000 years and doesn't approve of technology or agriculture. Saying that LotR races are normal, while other races are not is...

D&D 4E Essentials and 4E Classes: Compatible and Comparable?

Yeah, that tends to make them a lot more powerful. Expertise feats seemed to be pretty good without adding extra bonuses to them.

D&D 4E Essentials and 4E Classes: Compatible and Comparable?

Essentials classes seem roughly equivalent to other classes. Essentials feats seem stronger than their closest counterparts in other books (not that there aren't also strong feats in other books...). But for example, the PHB1 feat Human Perseverance is a racial feat that adds +1 to saves...

    Game with actions pool?

Exalted uses variable initiative steps for different actions. However, that sort of system is quite a bit different from one that grants each combatant a number of action points in a lump. HERO also grants characters different numbers of actions in a turn based on Speed, and splits them up...

    Runepriests

Variable benefits to powers is a pretty neat hook for a class. And while the Runepriest specific feat support is rather lacking (I'm with the Rune feats suck crowd), RPs are a strength based, weapon using class. So they can pick up a lot of the general weapon stuff, and have the stats to pick...

    D+D Power Creep

PHB 1 classes tend to be strong right out of the box (not so much warlocks and pallies) AND have better support since they can pull from several splat books and dragon articles. New classes tend to have far fewer options aimed at them (poor Runepriest and Seeker aren't covered in any relevant X...
