Only thing I don't like so far: Power Replacement

If you do allow players to keep their encounter powers, you need to check for abilities that trigger when all encounter powers are used. The Demigod power comes to mind, but there may be others. I'd normally be in favor of keeping my lower level powers, as a player, even if I never used them...

What's the best online map alternative till D&D Insider?

If you're desperate, you could also try Google documents. The spreadsheets can be set as editable by multiple people. Just adjust the cells to be squares and off you go. It's a lot less elegant than dedicated mapping programs, but it's very simple and requires no downloads or installation of...

Close Wounds (2nd) better than Revivify (5th)?

You'll also want to look into Delay Death, when you get 4th level spells. But yes, close wounds is fantastic. And if you're looking for more "coming back from the dead" cheese, combining revenance and revivify is pretty fantastic (and full of gooey cheesy goodness).

D&D 4E An in depth rules discussion on the mechanical problems and breakthroughs of 4e

Additional problems: No multiclassing, no old-school dual-classing, if you figure out at 4th or even 10th level that you don't really like your class, tear up the character sheet and start over. Way too many weapon specific powers (feats, sneak attack, etc.). Why can't I sneak attack with a...

    Is Forced Movement Inherently Breakable?

Eh, even if it does work, how is this different than the 3.x classic fast mount/fast dismount to travel infinite distances (as long as they're connected by a line of horses)? Just rule that it doesn't work because it's really dumb.

Marshall class balanced with Fighter BAB or as is?

I think it's a little weak, but not unplayably so. I like it for three purposes (none of which, unfortunately, seem to be the intended one): 1) It's a great cohort class, at least mechanically. Following your follower's orders seems a little odd, but it's a nice boost to the whole party, and...

Your top ten most useful items

I'm not going to count up my top 10, but I always like to have: A dagger, a fire source (and preferably also a non-fire light source), writing materials, backups to critical gear (second holy symbol, just for example), rope. Other stuff is good, but those are the essentials for my characters...

    Help building a "tough" character

I second the recommendation of Steadfast Determination. I'd also look into picking up mettle somehow. The usual way is either pious templar or hexblade. Not sure what other options are available now. Pious templar of some god of endurance or suffering might work (whatever fits your campaign...

Immediate Actions *can't* be used when flat-footed?

All you folks in the "flat-footed outside combat" camp, please answer this: In a game that's using immediate actions* can a wizard walk up up to a cliff, look it over, think about it for a minute, and cast feather fall to get to the bottom unharmed without first asking his companions to attack...

Immediate Actions *can't* be used when flat-footed?

So, back to feather fall. If it's an immediate action, and you can't use immediate actions while flat-footed, and you're flat-footed any time you're not in combat, it's pretty useless. Even if you walk up to a cliff, see the cliff clearly, and say, "Well, it's a pretty tough climb, I'll...

    Half-orc Scout spearfighter needs feats

Power attack has a significant drawback for a 3/4 BAB class. Combat Reflexes is nice with a longspear spring attacker because you can often trade 2 swings for 1. Setting up for a big feat chain doesn't seem profitable, because you're already invested in a big chain. With dodge and mobility...

Immediate Actions *can't* be used when flat-footed?

If, instead, Blade fell in a pit trap, would you let him cast feather fall? Also an immediate action. And if it can't be used without rolling initiative, it's almost entirely useless. (Seriously, a spell to prevent falling damage that you can only use in combat, after your initiative? What...

    General problem with saves?

Part of the problem is the vastly different effects of failed saves on PCs and monsters. Any given monster makes only a very, very tiny fraction of the number of saves that PCs have to make in the course of their career. And if they fail a save-or-die, the adventure continues. If a PC fails a...

    You have 3 wishes...

I've never actually cast a Wish in play. I've had characters who had access to them (three times), but never used it. In two cases it was an item, and I vastly prefer to keep such items for an emergency (see the "undo misfortune" bullet). In the third case, my wizard just never got a good...

    Ultimate Cure-battery Builds (post yours!)

Spontaneous Domain Casting with the Healing Domain is a good way to go. It's a wash up to 10th level, but at high levels replacing spontaneous mass cure moderate wounds with spontaneous heal is a good deal. And if you can convince your DM that those spontaneously cast spells are domain spells...

    Luck Blade: A Cursory Analysis

I love them, and use them. Of course, for the PC who has one, it's one of about a half dozen magical weapons and more than a score of mundane weapons he hauls around. Pays to be prepared. It's also a function of play style. My personal play style emphasizes saves over AC and HP. I take...

Can you Cleave with Lay on Hands?

How closely do most folks read the "at the same bonus" section? Suppose a dwarf paladin with a goblin-bane weapon smites a hobgoblin. He's +8 normally, +2 for the smite, +2 for the bane, +1 for race, for a total of +13 to hit. The gobbo explodes. He cleaves to a neutral human mercenary. Is...

    No More 5-Foot Stepping

If you do this, large monsters and spiked chains become significantly more dangerous. Traditional reach weapons and bows become essentially useless. Combat, after engagement, will become even more static than it already is, since nobody will be able to move even a little bit and still take a...
