Ultimate combat: Are Airships underpriced or are flying carpets a complete rip off?

Yeah, I think the airship is woefully underpriced. Sure, the carpet of flying is vastly more convenient for adventuring, but you can't base yourself out of a carpet, can you? Or carry vast amounts of bulky cargo that won't fit in your bag of holding? Brad

    Difficulty Eliminating the Grid

We have two games going. One is 4e, and we put out the dry erase board that one of us scored into a grid for that. The other is SR4, and we haven't used a grid for that, but do use some visual aids so people know who's where. There are a few runs coming up that'll need a grid, and I'm trying...

    [January] What are you reading?

On the Kindle, I'm re-reading The System of the World. After that, probably The History of the World According to Facebook, and then The Book of Cain, both of which I got from friends for Christmas. After those...probably starting on the Lensman books. Brad

    Legacy Item Penalty Question

What irritated me about Legacy items wasn't that they had penalties, but they weren't commensurate to the benefits they granted. An unappealing combination of weapon abilities and a few funky SLAs that I have to remember and that have CLs so low that everything you fight will save against them...

Are the Class Compendium articles still in beta?

What I find interesting is that the Class Compendium articles stopped after the Cleric article came out. After the great hue and cry that resulted, it seemed as if that stopped them. I honestly wonder if/when they'll do Rangers, as I can't imagine Twin Strike will survive in its current form...

Making guns palatable in high fantasy [Design Theory]

Exactly! It's not like most of us are doing a hard socioeconomic simulation, so there's no reason to bog ourselves down with realism that gets in the way of having fun. Especially when you're not applying that same level of realism rigorously to everything else that's unrealistic, like magic...

How many tabletop roleplaying games did you play in 2011?

Two: D&D 4e (played) SR 4e (DMed) No cons or one-shots so far this year. Brad

Which Essentials class do you like the most?

I switched my minotaur cleric from a Str build to the warpriest when we had an opportunity. It was certainly better at healing, and much better-defended. Unfortunately, it lost that oomph I got from swinging a big executioner's axe. It could use more Encounter-based utilities, instead of...

    Have you ever played Amber?

I did, briefly, sophomore year of college. The GM was an awful git. It might have also helped had I liked the books, instead of finding the first one boring. I bowed out after a few sessions. I hear that the game went on for another 2-3 years, though. Brad

    D&D 3E/3.5 converting 3e combats to 4e - are they serious?

Our DM took a while to learn that back in the day. The minion skirmishers volley-firing javelins at ridiculous accuracy in groups of four were kinda mean, especially since we didn't have good AoE or mobility at the time. Reminded me of the darn pygmies from Act 3 of Diablo 2. Brad

    Paladins cause heartburn

That's why I always thought that Swallow Whole was not a good thing to use on anything that doesn't run around in cloth. Brad

    help with my paladin/sorcerer

I'm gonna have to suggest that your current character reveals himself to be a weepy drunk and opens his veins after a night spent in front of a neverending supply of cheap whiskey. If you're not open to suicide, perhaps he gets in a bar fight and takes a bottle to the head. Or, the option of...

Which Essentials class do you like the most?

One thing I found when looking at it, is that while it doesn't seem impressive at first glance, the Blackguard can have a lot of stuff stack up and get up decently high. Somewhat against expectation, because it gets so much damage from having CA, you're actually going to get good mileage out of...

What did you learn from your last commune with nature?

Unless mithral isn't a mineral, then it'll show up on the Commune with Nature, but only if you ask about minerals. I don't see why it couldn't tell you where outsiders and undead were, since they're unnatural. Probably would need to be significantly unnatural, i.e. high hit dice. Brad

    SWTOR Beta

I got into this weekend's beta testing, figured I'd give it a try while it was free. I got my Jedi Consular up to 12 and my Sith Warrior up to 4. So, not terribly far up, but I got the Consular up to his advanced class, and went Shadow with that. I wasn't terribly impressed, for two reasons...

D&D 4E What are the generally powerful classes in 4e?

Yup. Pity that we almost certainly won't ever see Arcane, Divine, Primal, and Psionic Power 2. Brad
  17. C

    Assassin, Battlemind, and Vampire

Certainly! (Sorry for delay, was going out) It denies them power usage. Why? Because the Power Point scaling for the powers is meant to be that, at the full power point usage (that it includes a half-power usage is pretty much gravy), that it equals a non-PPUP classe's encounter power. Thus...

    Building a competent OAssassin

One of the players in our Dark Sun game started out as an Oassassin, and was reasonably effective. He then, at a rebuild point, hybridized into a ranger||assassin, and works very nicely now. Brad

    Assassin, Battlemind, and Vampire

Certainly they wouldn't switch out, because then nobody would play the classes. At least, not without further houserules addressing the scaling of the damage and effects. Brad

D&D 4E What are the generally powerful classes in 4e?

Yes, yes, a thousand times. I found, with my brutal rogue, that the ability to nearly auto-hit by attacking Reflex (via Piercing Strike) or another NAD and inflict Sneak Attack damage was far, far more useful than going for high-[W] powers. You're kind of dependent on having a good defender...
