In the current campaign I'm running, players used a variant of the "Focus and Foible" system that I believe was published in "The Way of the Wicked" for Pathfinder. The original was pick a stat to make 18, pick another to make 8. Everything else is rolled as 7+1d10. I tweaked it so the Focus...

It's not a huge deal, but it does mean they get more focus in Wisdom which is one of the three primary saving throws in the game. Since Charisma is a popular dump-stat, moving abilities away from it might be construed as an advantage of sorts.

"Vicious" is the 5E equivalent of "Keen" - it's a flat bonus that increases steadily instead of exponentially with other crit-related benefits, and also can apply to any weapon, not just slashing or piercing.

If they actually have an arrangement with WOTC where wizards is covering the refunds, this is fine, but if it's just passing the buck this is unacceptable.

Familiars pretty much all go poof after one hit, so putting them in melee and throwing sneak-attack spells is a bit risky. ;)

I love it, fantastic way to throw stuff at the players without their 30 years of experience telling them, "Oh, it's X, we just need to Y."

High level consumables should be a fraction of the listed "cost". Giant's strength potions just don't compare to Holy Avengers, etc.

There are a few class abilities that provide healing as well: usually self only, but sometimes others (Lay on Hands), so you'd also need to decide what to replace those with.

Nice ad-lib, that's very close to the official rule ("Shove" is Athletics vs Athletics/Acrobatics to knock the target prone or push them 5').

Is it possible that the phase "The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots" and similar are in the context of that specific class and aren't meant to override any reasonable interpretation of the optional multiclassing rules? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are no multiclass...

I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the rules to prevent spellcasting with Int 1, let along concentrating (which is based on Constitution).

Ummmm....yeah. 3E multiclassing was a also a fair bit like 1E dual-classing, but the XP penalties when your classes drifted apart made it hew a lot like 2E mc'ing as well. But you're right, like 3E, 5E removes most of the punitive elements in favour of elegant integration of abilities...

We found ghouls really terrifying at low level, but faced a horde of them at 7th and tore them to bits.

5E multiclassing is so very much like 1E dual classing, I'm not at all sure what system you are actually proposing.

Mixing challenge scores is problematic, it doesn't really work when you have a bunch of jerks that are way below the other monsters. The guidelines in the latest Basic specifically mention this: They aren't really neglible, so I wouldn't ignore them, but maybe count the orogs at about half...

My off the cuff response is that an NPC with class levels might have Challenge score of about 3/4 their level, but it might be as little as 1/2. It's a bit trickier than that, though: NPC's with spells tend to have spellcasting similar to the party (caster level roughly their Challenge score)...

Really, if that EVER happens, the train has left the tracks? Besides the player wasn't "just moving", they were escaping a very dangerous opponent. If there are no friends to come tie up that opponent before they get murdered, there might have bigger problems than having one boring round.
