What's an OGL? An SRD? What's OGC? A Quick Primer!

Oh sure, for an individual person's table I expect DMs will pull from all sorts of sources (has that ever not been the case?), but I still want there to be a world where people can put out their own OGLed settings or whatever as easily as possible, and that's simpler when they have more material...

[UPDATED AGAIN!] CURSE OF STRAHD Will Be Available March 15th

Martin Luther King Jr. Day. A national holiday in the US.

What's an OGL? An SRD? What's OGC? A Quick Primer!

I hope that a library of OGL archetypes that extend the 5e SRD (like what you're talking about) start to show up. One of my concerns is that the existence of the DM's Guild will mean that people would be more likely to just toss their stuff up there, which would make it impossible to reuse in...

[UPDATED AGAIN!] CURSE OF STRAHD Will Be Available March 15th

I admit, I'm morbidly curious what led to the choice of MLK day for the announcement. It does seem like a super weird time to do it. Is there some sort of significant gaming convention going on this weekend or something?

What's an OGL? An SRD? What's OGC? A Quick Primer!

FWIW, if you're trying to use the OGL it seems worthwhile to consider just steering clear of this sort of thing. Cloning the WotC versions of the various class archetypes is hard to do without it being at least a debatable if it's a derivative work or not. If it's an adventure, just don't use...

D&D 5E Markdown version of the 5e SRD

Ok, I lied. I did have some free time, so I sent you a pull request for the Fighter class ;-)

D&D 5E Markdown version of the 5e SRD

I don't have the time to actively work on this, but I just wanted to thank you for doing it. It'll be super cool to eventually have a version of the SRD sitting around that's easily forkable, so people can easily build complete versions of it that contain just the parts they want for their own...

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

What I'm saying is that while WotC has give you some ability to use existing Forgotten Realms stuff in things you post to DMGU, they haven't given you any right at all to license that content under the OGL. You don't get to just slap a license on something you derived from their stuff and call...

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

Umm, there's nothing I can find anywhere that even comes close to giving you the right to relicense arbitrary content under the OGL while posting it on DMGU. Heck, it's not even clear that you can post arbitrary OGL content that you didn't create to the DMGU at all (I expect this to come up in...

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

This, exactly this. Going from 5e SRD to playable game is a matter of pulling character creation rules, extra subraces, and some spells from Pathfinder, building a set of backgrounds, recreating the feats (or just dropping them entirely) and then fleshing out some alternative archetypes...

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

You'd have mostly different archetypes for the classes, different feats, different backgrounds, potentially a slightly different set of character generation rules (since they aren't included in the SRD). It could still feel quite a bit like 5e though. I mean consider that Pathfinder made plenty...

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

That's entirely dependent on what you claim as product identity. If you claim basically everything that isn't a game rule then there's relatively little of your adventure/supplement/whatever that can be safely reused.

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

Oh, I think it's pretty clear (based just on the single feat and background that were included) that WotC doesn't want it to be trivial to bootstrap a new game based on this SRD. That said, I hope they look at the bug reports and at least tweak some of the spell lists so that the content they've...

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

Ok, sure, but you'd still need a copy of the Player's Handbook or Basic PDF to actually play your adventure. That's fine for an adventure, but would be unfortunate for someone looking to make a new not-quite-d&d core book or something. One of the main things I like about a system with an OGL SRD...

Oh, I already did, for both this and for the Eldritch Blast thing. I'm all about sending in bug reports ;-)

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

That indicates that it may just be an oversight, which would be awesome (similar cases exist for other spells, for example Counterspell) but I don't see how it "can still be used" just because it's referred to. There's no OGL content that defines what the spell does, so you can't include the...

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

Yet also less than Basic in some cases. There's only a single background, a single subrace for each race and there are at least some differences in the spell lists (the one I picked up on was the lack of Fire Bolt, but there might be more). It's a little weird. I'd sort of hoped that the SRD...

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

I don't see what's confusing. If you're writing for DM's Guild (i.e. their online marketplace where they get a cut) you can use whatever. If you're using the OGL you get the subset of D&D 5e that made it into the SRD.

The Day Has Come! It's An OGL! And A Store To Buy & Sell D&D 5E Products!

Yeah, it's weird. They refer to other archetypes numerous times and say they're available at the end of the class description, but there's only ever one archetype there. Needs some editing work...

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like RAVENLOFT

Sure, but that's why I find it strange that people are talking about a Ravenloft season as a "once you're in you can't get out till the end" sort of thing. That's never been the case for any other AL season, and if the rule is optional (as I think it should be, since character portability is...
