WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

Someone really needs to explain to me what the OGL 1.0a has to do with making a movie. They put a lot of Attack Rolls and Skill Checks in movies these days? Are SRDs full of game rules suddenly relevant to the plot structure of feature films? Even WotC and TSR didn't bat an eye when they wanted...

So WHY Didn't The OGL Contain The Word 'Irrevocable'?

Look, I think the OGL is irrevocable, but comparing it to the GPL 2 and saying that the GPL 2 uses perpetual instead of irrevocable and so that’s fine is sort of missing the point. The GPL is owned by a nonprofit organization that is rabidly in favor of Free Software. Nobody has ever tried to...

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Not creating a law firm, this is the law firm that Brian Lewis (the lawyer who wrote the original OGL) works for, they apparently do a fair amount of work for various gaming companies in the Seattle area.

D&D (2024) One D&D Cleric & Revised Species Playtest Includes Goliath

Agreed, this is a repeat of the Battlemaster problem in 5e, where at higher levels you get to choose the maneuvers that weren't cool enough to pick the first time.

    D&D (2024) Expert Classes - Rules Glossary

Yeah, they used to think “this has something for everyone” was a good thing, but it turns out basically all the players were like “why do I need to spend a whole feat when I only want 1/4 of its features?”

    D&D (2024) Rogue Playtest Discussion

Honestly, it feels like the stuff that's going away in this version are mostly things that weren't intended to be there in the first place. Take the whole "Sneak Attack once per Turn" thing. Yes, this means that to really maximize your Sneak Attack damage you want to be attacking on your...

    D&D (2024) Rogue Playtest Discussion

Note that the criticals work with sneak attack in this version of the playtest, and to be perfectly frank I think this version of the thief is way more appealing than the "use objects as a bonus action" version. Agreed though, it's unfortunate that stuff like Booming Blade doesn't currently...

D&D (2024) One D&D Expert Classes Playtest Document Is Live

Just out of curiosity where did this actually happen? I've read a whole heck of a lot of those books, and I can't remember a single case.

    D&D (2024) Expert Classes - Rules Glossary

No, that's just how things should work for spells that take longer than a round to cast.

D&D (2024) One D&D Expert Classes Playtest Document Is Live

In practice, yes, it can play that way, but there are mechanical and world building implications to making these things magic (i.e. "that snare you're setting can be dispelled"), and that's a problem for some of us. In practice, I don't really like the feel of a caster ranger, so in the past...

D&D (2024) One D&D Expert Classes Playtest Document Is Live

Literally read them all, or near enough. I'm pretty darn sure he never does any sort of spellcasting that can't be explained by Drow magic abilities (i.e. Darkness, Faerie Fire, Levitate, etc).

D&D (2024) One D&D Expert Classes Playtest Document Is Live

The absolutely hilarious part of all of this is that WotC's own Most Important Iconic Ranger has never had this sort of spellcasting.

    D&D (2024) Sharp shooter/Great Weapon Mastery

This is a great nerf. The feats now give useful abilities, but aren't so head and shoulders above the rest that if you want to be a damage dealing warrior you're basically required to build for one of them.

    D&D (2024) Bard Playtest discussion

My only real question is how giving classes like the bard full spell selection flexibility is going to affect the overall power level of casters in the game. Like, the ability to swap out your spells all the time is the Wizard's thing, you know? So now the Bard gets to just pick from huge swaths...

D&D (2024) One D&D Expert Classes Playtest Document Is Live

I get that everyone likes to beat on the Ranger, but I actually like this version quite a bit. The thing with Hunter's Mark is pretty clearly what they wanted to do with Tasha's version, the extra flexibility in spellcasting is a big deal (and I don't even like casting Rangers, but I have to...

D&D (2024) Upcoming One D&D: Unearthed Arcana 'Expert' Classes (Bard, Ranger, Rogue)

I'm withholding judgement until I see some of this stuff. There are uses for this type of restriction that aren't keeping you from playing against type, like I could envision feats that explicitly interact with elements of the class group, those wouldn't make sense for characters outside that...

D&D (2024) Upcoming One D&D: Unearthed Arcana 'Expert' Classes (Bard, Ranger, Rogue)

If they don't put the label on the package they can't make other rules that care about that label. Having the groupings means you can have special feats that are only usable for that class group, for example, which is pretty useful from a design perspective.

D&D (2024) Upcoming One D&D: Unearthed Arcana 'Expert' Classes (Bard, Ranger, Rogue)

Generally positive about all the stuff they talked about. Love that they're trying various options for things from playtest to playtest, not just building directly on what they did in the first one.

D&D (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

I think this is pretty clearly the developers saying "Okay, the game was meant to operate with a fair amount of Inspiration floating around, but none of the DMs are actually giving it out at anywhere near the rate we anticipated, what else can we spend that inspiration on?" Thus you get it...
