D&D 5E 5E skills and the Perception vs Stealth imbalance

I find this original post at odds with... In the manner of handling Stealth v. Perception I described in my earlier post (along the same lines as Imaro), a prepared party can thwart ambushes with high situational awareness, preparation, or spells. This can be tough to do when caught...

D&D 5E 5E skills and the Perception vs Stealth imbalance

For me, I haven't had the same issues with Stealth and Perception as you've had, Cap. In the situations you're describing, the stealth roll represents success or failure on hiding immediately before the ambush or conflict. It's the immediate precursor to initiative. So, in these situations...

    D&D 5E What Alignment am I?

Actually, I don't see this description for your behavior as lawful at all. First, a job doesn't define your alignment. Being a priest, magistrate, watchman, brigand, or whatever doesn't define if where you fit on the alignment spectrum. Although there are certainly tendencies when you start...

D&D 5E How can warlock patrons teach things they don't know?

Really, if these are great old ones from beyond the walls of madness, shouldn't old Cthulhu's claws do 1d6*1000, cutting through three tenths since they are Midnight Sunstone?

    D&D 5E Attunement

My only issue with scaling per level is that this scaling is kinda already there by default. If a level 4 character really isn't expecting to have more than two items, the attunement cap doesn't have a salient effect. If, by six, they might get there third item, but also their third attunement...

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse or Hoard of the Dragon Queen

That's very true, Fighter's are strong at all levels, but really shine early on. A fighter and cleric combo will help make up for a small group. And like others have said as well, sprinkling in a few hirelings will help survivability.

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse or Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Yeah, Prot is probably your best bet for tanky fighting styles. But there aren't really any mechanics to force an enemy to attack you. Instead, often times enemies will be going after the one causing the most pain. That'll likely be your fighter anyway.

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse or Hoard of the Dragon Queen

I'd disagree slightly with Gilladian, I would recommend your nephew should look through either the pregens (or the PHB if you have it) and see what sounds cool. There are a lot of options through many of the classes that are relatively easy to pick up. As an example, in the LMoP game we've...

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse or Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Hi Jennifer, welcome to EN world. Here's some XP :) I'd have to say toy around with Phandelver and see how that plays. There's a lot of great content there and many hours of game time. Although Hoard has it's fair share of detractors, it's not really that bad of an adventure and fills a...

D&D 5E Evil Vs. Neutral - help me explain?

Permit me to cut to the chase, here. Really the crux of this (very interesting :-) ) debate is on who has the authority to make the call on the objective truth. In a vacuum, there can be myriad acceptable answers to this. Really, it's the setting that defines what actions lean to which...

D&D 5E Evil Vs. Neutral - help me explain?

So, as counterpoint (with pop culture spoilers). By that example, the pretty epic scene in Breaking Bad where Jane chokes on her own vomit highlighted Walt's descent into... neutrality??!?

D&D 5E D&D AL Play reports: Princes of the Apocalypse, sessions 1-23

I don't see Evil and Good as being simply different colored jerseys. I love the potential interplay of motivations, with evil characters furthering the goals of good NPCs through their own self-serving aims. Great field report, Merric, looking forward to more.

D&D 5E Convince me to Spend the Money

Just my 2 coppers on why I like the core 3 of 5e. I like the books because of the awesome games I can run with them. My kids love the robust options with each of the classes. The older ones enjoy the multiple axes to build characters from (different combinations of class, subclass...

D&D 5E 5E has brought this old gmaer back to D&D after 8 years!

With many arguments ending with, "So what rules are you going to let me play??!? I thought we were playing D&D, not some made-up Dad edition." Usually after I nixed some prestige class he'd found on the (old) D&D tools website. What?? These aren't typical teenage arguments?

D&D 5E 5E has brought this old gmaer back to D&D after 8 years!

Welcome to ENWorld (although it looks like I might be a couple weeks late). I think you'll find a number of us are a little more on the senior side. I started with the old Moldvay B/X while my wife cut her teeth on Holmes (grrrrr!). I've been running through the playtest and now with 5th...

    D&D 5E Those poor farmers!

Agreed, I do think this whole, "rulings, not rules" is an incredible boon to forum traffic... just because there's more to argue! ;-)

D&D 5E O Plate Mail, Where art Thou?

Similar to how it was in it's real history. Dammit, don't tell me this 5th edition is a sim game! ;) In regards to the OP, yeah the rarity of full plate, much like magic items, will be very much up to the style and theme of the campaign and the GM. If you're playing in the Horde of the...

D&D 5E High level characters: A one off

I think one of the important points to get out of this (at least one of the ones I gleaned from it), is that at high levels, it's pretty straightforward to add complications (monsters, tricks, traps, etc) to tailor encounters to the right challenge for your party's composition. Even ignoring...

D&D 5E CR and Encounter Difficulty: Is It Consistently Wrong?

As a side note, this world would be in a dark place if we could only rely on functional representations of polynomial order of 2 or less, and to claim a cubic function isn't a "reliable" equation. Frankly, the data looks like a power law might fit better, but that's neither here nor there. The...

    D&D 5E Easter Eggs in 5E

Sorry for the little bit of thread necromancy, but I'm just getting around to reading my DMG. Anyone else notice that, in the table of monsters by environment, the Tarrasque is listed as a CR 30 Urban encounter. I have a feeling this is an homage to this epic thread.
