It might be more useful to compare the spell to True Strike rather than Magic Missile, as True Strike also changes in value depending on what you use it with. While True Strike isn't quite an auto-hit, and takes longer to use, it's also a lot more versatile.

You're right about bursts - but Fireball is a spread. It does go around pillars; the most you can get from it if there is an open path to you (and not just a straight line, either) that's shorter than the fireball's radius is half cover, not full.

Don't forget that Disguise is opposed by Spot, which is cross-class for most classes. A +10 bonus means a whole lot more when the 20th level wizard with 10 wisdom only has +13 to spot checks - and that only if he's maxed out his ranks, and has his familiar near by.

As a side note to all this - being immune to Dispell can be a very bad thing. If the fighter is immune to Dispell Magic, what are you going to do if he's Dominated? What if the wizard gets Polymorphed? The standard response to this type of spell is to Dispell it, and you can't do that anymore...

As far as Magic Items go, the Scarab of Protection blocks the next 12 levels of energy drain or the next 12 death attacks, in addition to granting 15 SR.
