D&D 5E The D&D rapier: What is it?

Regarding rapier and dagger I have an additional weapon property in my game called "Off-hand" (which was inspired by one of the threads on this board) that applies to all 1d4 light weapons allowing them to be paired with a non-light one-handed weapon for two weapon fighting. (The Dual Wielder...

D&D 5E Multiclassing ability score prerequisites—required for balance or an unnecessary hurdle?

I think they're fine as-is. If anything they're too easy in some cases (with Bards, Paladins, Sorcerers and Warlocks all using Charisma, multiclassing between them is trivial in most cases, other than the paladin Strength requirement. I'd actually like to see most classes have two required...

D&D 5E What platform to play 5E Online?

Yeah, I'm really hoping that Roll20 gets on the reduced price bandwagon with Fantasy Grounds and D&D Beyond soon. I just can't bring myself to spend $50 on digitial copies of books I already own (even if in reality the time saved versus manually putting everything from them in is probably worth it.)

D&D 5E What platform to play 5E Online?

Easiest way to create characters in Roll20 is to choose a character sheet (from the Game Settings page), launch the game and then from the Journal tab (looks kind of like a book or newspaper) right-click and choose "Add Character" from the list. That will create a new character, which you can...

    D&D 5E TftYP - Sunless Citadel Debrief

I'm thinking if I ever run this, I'd allow the Midsummer apple to cure Sir Bradford and Sharwyn. Give the PCs a choice between taking the valuable apple as treasure or to free two NPCs from their bondage to the tree and inevitable death.

    D&D 5E Critical Failures

I'm one of the folks that does "the double 1s when you have Disadvantage" thing. Even then, it's a minor mishap rather than completely disastrous. That being said, I'll sometimes apply some flavor to an ill-timed natural 1 during combat, just to keep things fun. In a recent game the...

    D&D 5E Question about potions

I require my PCs to take the time Identify other magic items, but I just tell them what potions they find are. While the "sip it and see what happens" game can occasionally lead to amusing results, I prefer to have the PCs spend more time during the session adventuring.

D&D 5E Big Battle, Exciting Victory, 36 seconds.

We had a 3 hour combat last session, but that was a combination of a ton of participants (6 person party plus 3 friendly NPCs vs. a dozen or so ogres, two "elite ogres" [re-skinned hill giants] and the BBEG and we were missing half the players, so everyone was doubled-up and playing one...

D&D 5E D&D Beyond - Some Entries Now Include Pronunciations

I've always pronounced "Drow" to rhyme with "crow" because it sounds more sinister to my ear, but D&D media has been pronouncing it to rhyme with "ow" pretty consistently for years.

    D&D 5E Bastard Sword Idea

As others have said, the 5E longsword is a bastard sword (which brings it more inline with the historical definition of longsword.) What the game is actually missing now is an arming or knightly sword (ie. a single-handed slashing sword) that previous editions of the game incorrectly dubbed a...

D&D 5E Do You Hint at Damage Resistance?

I tell my players (via description) when they encounter resistance/immunity. Their characters know how their weapons and abilities work. When something doesn't work the way it should, they notice.

Critical Role Delve into Critical Role's campaign setting with co-writer James Haeck!

I'm glad they finally put their foot down and said "No more Critmas as part of the normal broadcast." They tried several times but fans kept whining they wanted to see it, but the cast eventually said "Enough is enough." (It was also really unfair to the crew to have to constantly stay late so...

Critical Role Delve into Critical Role's campaign setting with co-writer James Haeck!

Mercer doesn't use straight XP, but rather hands out "hash marks" based on RP, doing something cool, overcoming challenges, etc that then get converted into a certain number of XP based on the character's level. (I think he posted a link to his system on Twitter at some point.) The end result is...

D&D 5E Why does WotC put obviously bad or illogical elements in their adventures?

Think about how many movies or video games--which go through a far more intensive writing and development process than your average adventure--have giant plot holes or nonsensical elements. Sometimes things get missed or the reasoning that's perfectly clear to the writer doesn't make it onto the...

Critical Role Delve into Critical Role's campaign setting with co-writer James Haeck!

That being said, I need to remind one of my players every other game that drinking a potion is not a bonus action. :) However, I did swipe Mercer's one spell up to 2nd level and one normal spell per turn if a bonus action spell is used house rule (rather than limiting to cantrips if a bonus...

D&D 5E If you had to choose between Sorcerer bonus spells or expanded

Put me in "Bonus Spells Known by Archetype/Origin" camp. It looked like the official classes were going in that direction, too, based on the UAs, but then they rolled it back.

D&D 5E How has your personal experience/expertise affected rulings?

Out of curiosity, what stats do you use for brigandine? I see lots of references to "This is what actually existed that modern people mistook for studded leather" but no one says where it should actually fall on the armor charts.

    D&D 5E Ending geas

I like the "Spell slot used must equal or exceed the slot used to cast the Geas" idea. I'd also be tempted to just change the Psychic damage to occur every time you attempt to disobey the Geas, not just once per day.

D&D 5E How Did You Get Used to Roll 20 or Fantasy Grounds?

Thank you for mentioning this. I just watched the first 3 videos last night and already picked up a few new tricks. (Now I have the urge to completely re-do how I've been managing my handouts... :) )

D&D 5E How Did You Get Used to Roll 20 or Fantasy Grounds?

I will say that since the addition of built-in character sheets in Roll20 and being able to drag-and-drop from the SRD my prep time has dropped substantially. I still have to do a decent amount, but part of that is running a Pathfinder module in 5E, so I still have to do a lot of custom stuff...
