D&D 5E Is my DM being fair?

I totally heard this in Kevin Conroy's voice in my head.

    D&D 5E So Why Can't 5E Get a Video Game?

I wasted way too many quarters playing Shadows over Mystara in the arcade when I was younger and promptly bought Chronicles of Mystara for both Xbox 360 and PS3 when it came out so I could play with my friends on both systems. The D&D stuff is mostly cosmetic, but it's still a really fun game.

D&D 5E Inspiration: Exclusive, Group, or None

I was constantly forgetting to hand it out, too. What I've done because of that is (based on an Angry GM article, but modified) I give each character Inspiration at the start of every session. If they have Inspiration and they're attempting an action that's tied to their Ideals or Bonds, they...

    D&D 5E D&D Beyond Phase 2 and 3 are open beta!

Wow. I'm getting flashbacks to this "DND Character Gen" program I had on my PC back in the MS-DOS days. Does it also randomly generate names that are just letters strung together with no thoughts towards pronounceability? :)

    D&D 5E So Why Can't 5E Get a Video Game?

I enjoyed the Baldur's Gate games, but I only played them once. (I never managed to make it through Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2). Temple of Elemental Evil, on the other hand, I played through a dozen times and even spent about a year or so helping the Circle of Eight with their fan fixes...

    D&D 5E So Why Can't 5E Get a Video Game?

My brother and I were just talking how we'd love to see something like Temple of Elemental Evil made for 5th Ed (though, obviously, less buggy.) Turn-based, near-perfect rules replication (to the point of having a single page of "house rules" listing the differences in the back of the manual)...

D&D 5E Is my DM being fair?

I agree. Any system that rewards the aggressor in any situation by allowing them to automatically go first (whether it's before initiative is rolled or by starting initiative on their count) greatly rewards players/characters that have a "kill first, ask questions later" approach.

D&D 5E Why wimpy SLING damage and range?

I'd still take the sword. You have a lot more options half-swording with a longsword than you do with a dagger. (Especially if your opponent is armed as well as armored, which is usually the case.) Though anyone trying to melee with someone in plate while unarmored themselves is going to be in a...

    D&D 5E Creating a 5E Light Cleric?

I briefly played a Light Cleric (though I went Variant Human and took Spellsniper and snagged Produce Flame as my bonus cantrip so I could mix things up between attack rolls and saves (with Sacred Flame) depending on what I was facing. I think it's a solid class and would definitely shine in an...

    D&D 5E What's the worst spell?

You know, I missed the "Weapon" part in the spell description. That definitely makes it even worse. Oh well, as DM I will continue to allow it to apply to Strength-based natural attacks. (Weapons-only seems like a really silly restriction.)

    D&D 5E What's the worst spell?

While Ray of Enfeeblement isn't great, the wizard in my campaign has used it fairly effectively. While Hold Person is better at the same level (and the wizard has this as well), it's highly restrictive in what it can effect, whereas RoE works against anything that uses Strength to attack. Even...

    D&D 5E Character Portraits

If you can't find what you're looking for, there's always Hero Machine. I've had players use it before for Roll20 games when they couldn't draw and couldn't find a picture they liked. www.heromachine.com/

D&D 5E Moving through occupied square....

Side note: I personally would rule that the ranger's ability to ignore difficult terrain would not apply to moving through occupied squares. (Save the leaping up and running across people's heads/shoulders for the monk, please. :P)

D&D 5E Is my DM being fair?

I wouldn't roll initiative until the enemy party actually teleports in. If neither side has any way of actually attacking the other (because they're miles away) then combat hasn't started yet and initiative isn't rolled.

D&D 5E Magic armor and special materials

I agree that flavorful magic items are a lot more fun (and the fact that 5E allows weapons and armor to be magical without having a plus at all opens up a lot of possibilities.) I'm currently running a converted Rise of the Runelords and every generic +whatever item listed in the AP is either...

D&D 5E Magic armor and special materials

I was going to say elven chain is an example of magical armor made out of a special material, but then re-read the description and realized it doesn't actually say it's made of mithral. But I do agree that magical armor that increases AC is the thing most-likely to break Bounded Accuracy. I had...

D&D 5E Is my DM being fair?

The feat, as-written, negates surprise. Nowhere in the text does it say you automatically know where your foes are. A character with Alert has opportunities other characters don't. 1) They can take reactions during an ambush scenario (such as Shield or Deflect Arrows). 2) They can take cover or...

    D&D 5E Undead fortitude

Undead Fortitude. If damage reduces the zombie to 0 hit points, it must make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, the zombie drops to 1 hit point instead. I'm not sure how else one could interpret it...

D&D 5E Is my DM being fair?

No DM is perfect. I've been running games for almost 30 years and I still make mistakes and I'm still improving. My style has also changed a lot over the years. That being said, I'm also old-school and firmly believe "DM's game, DM's rules." That doesn't mean players aren't allowed to plead...

    D&D 5E Keen Weapons in 5th Edition?

The problem is most fumble systems aren't well designed. The vast majority of stories I've heard over the years are of the "I rolled a one and accidentally chopped my own head off" variety. The special "Fumble Decks" you can buy seem especially guilty of this sort of thing. When we were younger...
