D&D 5E Unarmed strike finesse house rule

Well, it's 1/turn, not per round, so those sweet Opportunity Attacks provoked by Polearm Master would be eligible for Sneak Attack, provided the requirements are met (though being a Swashbuckler makes this easier.) GWM combined with Sneak Attack probably isn't worth it, unless you have multiple...

    D&D 5E Keen Weapons in 5th Edition?

Right. The problem with any critical fumble system is that they more harshly penalize the people who are more-skilled with weapons (those making more attacks per round) than those who are not. Also, the idea of someone seriously injuring themselves or an ally (or whatever "whacky" result is on...

    D&D 5E Keen Weapons in 5th Edition?

I've handed out a couple weapons with an expanded crit range in my games, but they're incredibly rare and require attunement. (Both were rapiers designed with the idea to encourage the party rogue to get involved in melee more often.) No problems so far.

D&D 5E Feelings on Ranged Damage

As others have said, D&D, particularly high level D&D, is not the system to use if you want dramatic, one-shot kills. (And if you want to try to do that, the assassin rogue is the class designed for it.) I'm currently running a 6 person, 6th level party, consisting of a wolf barbarian, life...

D&D 5E Spending time [Encounter pacing and Resting restrictions]

Yeah, the "simple" method is to leave the time pool alone, mark off an hour and roll 6 dice any time the party takes a short rest. So every rest has a chance of triggering a complication, but the effects of the party's previous actions are still hanging out there, waiting for the PCs to fill the...

D&D 5E Thoughts on giving level 4 ASI / Feat at level 1 instead of 4?

I've both run and played in games that gave a free feat to all PCs at first level. It hasn't been a problem so far. Yes, characters are a little more powerful, but not hugely so. Variant Human in my game loses the bonus feat and instead gets +2 to one score, +1 to another, 1 free save...

D&D 5E Musical instrument tool proficiency and performance skill proficiency

I was talking about using one to "aid" the other. Someone with a good Perform skill using it to help "sell" their skill with an instrument, or using backing music (via an instrument) to improve the effect of their singing.

D&D 5E Musical instrument tool proficiency and performance skill proficiency

A good example of someone making both a Charisma (Performance) and Musical Instrument proficiency check at the same time would be the scene where Kvothe earns his pipes in The Name of the Wind.

D&D 5E Spending time [Encounter pacing and Resting restrictions]

I don't get the complaints that this is a "metagame solution" or "breaks immersion." If the PCs are painstakingly searching every inch of every room, digging through every pile of refuse in case there's treasure in it and taking a rest every time they feel remotely diminished in resources, the...

D&D 5E Dual weilder feat needed to draw 2 weapons?

Put me in the "It really shouldn't take that much more effort to draw two weapons than one" camp. Unless you're going for a Iaijutsu-style quick draw strike where you want your non-weapon hand to maneuver the scabbard into optimal position it's not going to make a huge difference.

D&D 5E DMs, do you ever have trouble thinking small?

I actually ran a campaign along these lines once. My players were asking for an old-school "kick the doors in" adventure with a bunch of dungeon crawling and hunting for the MacGuffins needed to defeat the big bad like we played when we were kids. So I came up with the idea of this ancient...

D&D 5E Musical instrument tool proficiency and performance skill proficiency

Technically, no, because a Climber's Kit is listed under Adventuring Gear, rather than Tools. By the rules you could no more have proficiency in it than you could have proficiency in using a backpack. That being said, if someone wanted to spend the time and GP to become proficient in a...

D&D 5E Has anyone ran an encounter (or fought) with The Kraken form the MM?

As great as that fight was, it was definitely modified. They weren't allowed to kill the kraken (as doing so would have doomed a nearby druid enclave) so they used different tactics than they might have in a normal fight. Also, the DM modified the kraken to allow the tentacles to be severed...

D&D 5E Musical instrument tool proficiency and performance skill proficiency

The difference between tools and skills is tools require a physical object to perform, while skills are inherent to the character (though physical objects can sometimes help, such as a climber's kit for Strength (Athletics) checks to climb.) Thieves' Tools are a tool proficiency because you...

D&D 5E Attunement & New or Converted Items

Another one would be if it has powers that reset on a rest (short or long) it requires attunement. If it's got charges or regains the ability at each dawn/dusk, then it doesn't necessarily need it (though more powerful items still do). Raw plusses are not actually a good indicator. Generic...

D&D 5E Can Tavern Brawler use cards as Improvised Weapons?

If a player said to me "I want to play a guy who uses playing cards as weapons." and then took Tavern Brawler to support it, I'd probably be okay with it. They're burning a (half) feat in order to do the same damage as darts. Sure they can carry more cards than darts (and hide them easier) but...

D&D 5E How are you using Tales from the Yawning Portal?

I haven't run it yet. Currently reading through the book and Hidden Shrine isn't really grabbing me as a DM, so I imagine I probably won't run that one. Sunless Citadel and Forge of Fury at least seem serviceable.

D&D 5E Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

This is a tangent, but no one is requiring you to use them or adhere to them. I actually like them because they give you an idea of what party level the adventure writer had mind when creating that portion of the adventure. (I've also used them when I've decided I don't feel like bothering with...

D&D 5E Smite Nerf: Paladin Buff?

As someone currently playing a paladin in a campaign with a crapton of demons and undead (and running another game involving a paladin) I think the paladin is working as designed. When I'm playing, I'm constantly agonizing on when to use Divine Smite. Sometimes, it's "obvious", other times a...

D&D 5E Illusionist - is it as weak as it seems?

I played in a short-lived campaign with someone else playing an Illusionist with the Keen Mind feat. While generally considered a "weak" feat, in his hands it was pretty nifty. He could instantly recall and then perfectly reproduce via Illusion magic anything he had seen or read within the last...
