Natural Armor I'm at work, don't have the rules right in front of me, but my impression is that the armor conferred by the amulet is considered Natural by the rules, therefore it would stack--like gnoll natural armor +1, Splintmail on top of it stacks with AC Bonus as well. I hope this helped.

PRoblems I haven't encountered that problem. Maybe your DM isn't making the game fatal enough. Perhaps if he killed of a character every game or so, you'd have new opportunities to create replacements and experiment, etc.
