The Arsenal Gaming Cafe in Indianapolis

I'm bumping this because I'm so jazzed about it. My co-workers and I are starting a weekly boardgame lunch session there this week. The place is freakin' cool. If I remember, I'll post some cell phone pics later.

The Arsenal Gaming Cafe in Indianapolis

This gaming cafe just opened in Fountain Square on Virginia, just south of I-70. I plan to run monthly one-shots there and I've started up a yahoogroups mailing list for sign ups and such. Even if you don't want to sign up, at least check the place out and spend some money there so they stay...

    New Podcast Posted!

I just listened to the podcast on the commute this morning. I really like that they are making the monsters easier to run. I also like that you can have more old school encounters (you get ambushed by 20 goblins!). And I like Mike Mearls' talk about exception-based design. I really didn't have a...

    What's your favorite inexpensive wine?

Yellow Tail! That's right, I don't know why I was calling it Red Tail. Anyone know of a good, inexpensive, oakey, butttery Chardonnay? I'm about the only one I know that likes 'em oakey and buttery and I have trouble finding good ones. Probably the best Chard I've had was Chalk Hill, but...

    What's your favorite inexpensive wine?

You can get great deals on wine these days. There are some wonderful wines from Chile and Australia that are very inexpensive. I'm digging Montes from Chile right now. We used to buy a lot of Gabbiano Chianti and Red Tail until we got tired of it. What's your favorite deal? Keep it under the...

    What is your favorite soup?

BTW, I love my stick blender. I got one for Christmas and now blending soup does not suck. We had the mushroom bisque. It was pretty good, but also pretty expensive. Good mushrooms are not cheap and this recipe had a pound of them in it! I used the left over mushrooms in ramen the other night...

What Makes a Convention Game Great?

I've used this one to great effect before. It's great when you need a traitor. The first time I did this, I wanted a game with a high body count where the players would really worry about losing their PCs. So I brought a friend and ruthlessly killed his character in the first hour. My hint...

October - What are you Reading?

Bone compilation and Jeff VanDerMeer's City of Saints and Madmen. The latter is about the fictional city of Ambregris that reminds me of New Crobuzon or Viriconium. http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/422075?shelf=currently-reading

    Your Ultimate Homebrew

The ultimate homebrew should have plenty of chocolate malt. Oh, wait, you don't mean beer? My ultimate homebrew is one that someone else made and gave to me for free. I'd rather spend my time playing than creating a campaign setting where 90% of it will go unused.

    Reasons behind Thanc0/AC in 1E/2E

This leads me to the question: Is it THAC0, as in Waco, TX or THAC0 as in "whacko"?

    What is your favorite soup?

We made the aforementioned onion soup with Guiness last Sunday. It was good, but very salty. Next time I would make sure to buy unsalted beef stock. Next up: a mushroom bisque recipe my wife found on the web.

    What Makes an Encounter Exciting?

Not penalizing players for doing cool things. Nothing bugs me more than: A NEW RPG PLAYER: "Ok, I'm going to pick up the table and run across the room to smash the thugs against the wall!" DM: "Ok, you suffer an attack of opportunity... Roll, roll, roll... and take 13 points of damage. Now make...

September - What are you Reading?

I'm halfway through On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. Pirates, voodoo, zombies and... puppets. BTW, a coworker put me on to http://www.goodreads.com. This might be a good way for us to share the books we are reading and the ones we've already read. Here's my profile. I've only just started...

    What is your favorite soup?

Also: Next time you eat soup, insist on calling it "sloop" until you've annoyed everyone around you. Continue to do so until you no longer find it funny.

    What is your favorite soup?

I'm a big Alton Brown fan. Here's something that the wife and I make probably once a month. Mostly we use fish (usually tilapia) instead of shrimp to make it less expensive. Hints: Use a layer or parchment and a layer of aluminum foil to avoid leaks...

    What is your favorite soup?

I love soup. I had some beer cheese soup at the World Famous Indianapolis Ram this afternoon. And three pints of Java Breakfast Stout, but don't tell my boss... My favorite soup is New England Clam Chowder. I think the best I've had was probably at Legal Seafood in Boston. But there was some...

    What is your favorite beer?

Just last week a co-worker who used to live in PA was telling me the same thing. Absolute hell for a beer geek! He said that his buddies would have beer tasting parties all the time since you have to buy beer by the case. That really sucks. You know, those laws were originally started back in...

Recommendations needed for a new system for an Old DM

Go with Savage Worlds. You can pick up the rules for $10! Then get one of the plot point setting books. I've played about a third of 50 Fathoms so I can vouch for it. I'm the DM and I've done so little prep for that game its astonishing. We've had a blast with it and its almost no work to run.
