Yes, the 4E way of doing this would be to not dispel the ritual, but just to factor it in into the general difficulty level, and then run an overall skill challange against that difficulty for the entire infiltration.

Yep, the question is how far related the spell considers "family". And since you can have bloodlines that cross species borders in a D&D world (dragon -> half dragon -> sorcerer), we are talking about the potential genocide of several species... including humans and elves.

Thus you have all the sorcerers descendant from those half-dragons. So, you have a lot of sorcerers with a certain black dragon lineage, and all their human / humanoid relatives lined up for the chopping block too...

Note that "family" is rather undefined. Theoretically, it could recurse back to the first black dragon, and then down to all its descendants. That for example includes all sorcerers that trace their lineage back to black dragons. And then their human/elf/etc families. Are all those fair target...

Who cares that the dragon was begging for mercy... It was evil; the MM sez so! And think of all that XP!! If V had thought about summoning an army of unseen servants beforehand and sent them out to the targets, he/she could really have gotten condensed and concentrated D&D down pat; kill lots...
