    Course ideas for Wizarding Academy

Well, I think people would have a harder time accepting someone becoming an expert marksman without expending ammo, an expert driver without expending gas, or an expert swordsman who never practices swinging his sword. The question is: How different are magic spells/rituals from this? What do...

    Course ideas for Wizarding Academy

Spell-casters ought to train... casting their spells, I guess. Which makes you wonder about all those spells with expensive material components, such as precious diamonds - how much does it cost to train casting them? (Not to mention 4E-style rituals... ) (Background: My Shadowrun GM was very...

Pathfinder 1E Advice on Character Concept

Wespon Finesse helps with to hit, but not with damage. This makes it very suitable for those combat maneuvers that can be done with finesse-able weapons. I've used this for the following Pathfinder bard concept (currently at lvl 7): 1) I use Versatile Performance with Performe Dance to get a...

    The ethics of ... death

I'd say that in my experience, information gathering the mundane way , through interactions or scouting, usually is more fun and more responsive than divinations. It has the advantage that it can either be a full-blown scene, or just a roll followed by some brief exposition from the DM. In the...

    The ethics of ... death

Exactly. I would not say that i was the original purpose, but the presence of SoD monsters is a good tool to make awareness and preparedness *matter*. As for NPC casters, as opposed to monsters - well, if they are notable, I imagine you could be able to research their favourite spells in advance...

    The ethics of ... death

To me, SoD monsters give meaning to all the activities you do to *avoid* said effect, especially for non-combat roles. Simply, making preparedness pay off. For example: A) The group's social character does Gather Information in the villages on the road to the dungeon. Gets tips that there is a...

D&D 5E Wandering Monsters- playable monsters

Nope. Played a pixie sorceress in a lvl 1-20 3.5 Savage Tide campaign, and loved every minute of it. Currently playing a Kitsune bard in a Pathfinder Skull & Shackles campaign, and some kind of werecat in a homebrew system Crimson Throne campaign.

    "Narrative Options" mechanical?

Oh, it was not the bravery aspect that was the important one to the anecdote - it was the internal conflict; the big gap between the deeply emotional response and the analytically intellectual wargamer response. The difference between *living* a narrative and *constructing* a narrative, you...

    "Narrative Options" mechanical?

 Um, that is why I used the words "To me, that [...] summarizes" above.

How to avoid ridiculous player character builds

We ran wishlists at first in our 4E tryout campaign, as it was the recommended method. My experience then was that the players simply was waiting impatiently for the moment "their" item would show up in one of the adventure's treasure parcels. ;) After growing impatient with the logistic...

Got to agree with this. This would have been an XP comment if those had been visible... ;)

How to avoid ridiculous player character builds

Yep, got to admit that it was my assumption. But, to be frank, I don't see much difference between the wishlist approach (which is what I assume you mean by "DM providing") and the purchase approach - it is merely a question if your stuff on order is delivered during adventures or between...

    "Narrative Options" mechanical?

A number of years ago, I changed gaming groups, and by doing this I suddenly became able to play the characters I *wanted* to play, rather than the characters my previous DM thought I *ought* to play. In one of the first campaigns with the new group, I suddenly ran into a conflict between the...

How to avoid ridiculous player character builds

I would say that utility items, such as Winged Boots, Cloak of the Manta Ray, Quickrunner's Shirt, etc, are even more game-changers. After all, you can adjust for the party's to-hit and AC by selecting the AC and to-hit of the monsters you throw at the party. Throwing a +X sword at the fighter...

How to avoid ridiculous player character builds

In my opinion, restricting magic items is the single decision *most* likely to cause *severe* imbalance between spell-using and non-spell-using characters in your game. If a fighter is able to purchase a fligth object, it puts him on equal footing with the wizard with his fly spell. If a...

Pathfinder 1E Post here if you're a PATHFINDER RPG fan!

I do like Pathfinder. I'm a bigger fan of Starfox's homebrew (http://hastur.net/wiki/Action), but we're running a Pathfinder campaign too, and I think the system has held up well. I've had much fun with the souped-up combat maneuvers in particular.

Note that what I quoted was Pathfinder, not 3.5. There are lots of small differences...

How to get into a Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion

Think it has to be specifically a portable hole and a bag of holding that intersects for bad things to happen, not not just any extradimensional spaces. Could not find the corresponding text from the 3.5, but the Pathfinder SRD has this text: A number of spells and magic items utilize...

    Pathfinder 1E Alter Self question

It is a pity that there isn't a higher level variant with more abilities, similar to what Beast Shape et al have.

When is a lack of bonus a penalty?

The developers of the now sadly cancelled MMO City of Heroes were rather open and transparent, often participating in the game forum and engaging in discussions about their game. Since it was an MMO, arguments about balance were rife and frequent (as were the accusations of "nerfing"), and one...
