The price of streaming vs out right owning

It’s not cheaper. People think buying a game for 70 is expensive versus a sub that lets you play multiple games but in the long term, it is not. I was spending 70/ month and maybe the family played 2 games. Are the subs worth $840/ year? I was not spending that buying games. I found that most...

The price of streaming vs out right owning

Some are business related. I switched from Adobe to NitroPDF since I could purchase the software. I had a few more beyond it such as Namecheap and a monthly web license and my wife had several. Subs are pervasive. Many do not send a monthly bill. They just hit your credit card so you only see...

eBook Prices - Is it just me…

Streaming, apps, SaaS (M365, Adobe, etc), games….. Subs are pervasive. The smaller upfront expense is fine at a micro level but grow huge at a macro one. I turned most off and am saving a lot of money.

eBook Prices - Is it just me…

I recently compiled a list of all my subs. I was paying close to $800/month that was around $9500/year. How long did it take you to collect those CDs? 10, 20, 30 years? As for my kids, both my parents recently died. I had to go through decades of stuff. I sold or donated it. It was not wasted...

I think it costs more money in the long term. There is a limit on the amount you can consume in a given period. Once the sub or license expires, then you end up with nothing. I was on the same page before I saw a lot of content I purchased disappear with no compensation so I went back to physical.

Rant: The WORST way to encourage people to try other games than D&D

Dungeons and Discourse, I think. She never gets to the point until 3/4 into the video and it always tends to be depressing rather than funny.

Rant: The WORST way to encourage people to try other games than D&D

There is some Irish TTRGP influencer that pops on YouTube with D&D doom all the time. I watched 1-2 of her vids and they just seem designed to make you angry.

eBook Prices - Is it just me…

I take great joy in having a physical library in my home. It was the one thing I wanted in a home growing up. I do not mind re-buying points if there is a value add such as a cool new edition or to replace copies that have seen better days. The same goes for ebooks. I do not mind buying a new...

No one has an issue with people getting compensated fairly; however, Amazon is problematic. They force platform exclusivity if you join their subscription program and they are increasingly making their products and services worse for consumers. A lot of folks switched from kindle over the latest...

You cannot now. You’d have to buy a new kindle that has WiFi to get the books.

I also have the last Oasis. If you google it, it is a long running issue. If you keep the kindle offline for a while and then connect, it erases and content no loaded via Amazon services.

I did not know that was the case for Kickstarter deliveries.

Most Kickstarter RPGs used to deliver PDF copies via Drivethru and this is moving to individual company accounts so it is hard to keep track of stuff. I have moved to download everything into personal folders with a NAS backup.

I would prefer to have the option to buy books anywhere as well. Troll Lord, for instance, stopped giving KS backers digital copies through drivethrurpg and it bites because I like having a single place for my digital gaming.

It is a feature. It is difficult to build wealth if you have no assets and you sub to everything. I do hope that laws change to allow for digital ownership.

D&D General How Long Did You Play Only D&D Before Trying Another Game

I started with Werewolf. The GM ran one session and moved to 2e. I played D&D exclusively from 93-2003 when I started doing the ENW NC game days. I played a lot of systems since.

eBook Prices - Is it just me…

My wife’s a librarian and one of their big vendors just went subscription only. They used to have an option where a library purchase meant that the content was purchased and accessible when the contract expired. Now, the library pays forever or they lose access to entire databases and...

eBook Prices - Is it just me…

Now Amazon controls complete access to how you can deliver your purchases to your device. I, for example, keep my kindle in airplane mode. If I bring it online, Amazon wipes ALL of my sideloaded content as well as all of my locally created bookshelves. They only way to prevent this is to give...
