What are you reading? (April 2005)

Re-reading all of Glen Cook's Garret, P.I. fantasy-detective series. Started with Sweet Silver Blues from 1987 (man its been 18 years since I last read it!). Great stuff and fun too.

Can You Recommend Fantasy-Detective Works with a Film Noir Flavor?

I love Glen Cook's Garret, P.I. series that is set in a fantasy world replete with dwarves, elves, half-elves, ogres, etc. You name it, it's in there. It is high fantasy mixed with 1940s film noir grittiness. Garret, a human detective, reminds you of Humphrey Bogart's portral of Sam Spade with...

Are you a good role player?

As I have gotten older I have gotten better as a PC role player. As a DM I can fluctuate from average to very good but find it much more taxing.

Alien Apocalypse - Anyone else planning on watching ole Ash?

I love Bruce Campbell flicks but man this latest was just bad writing and some pretty poor acting on most of the supporting cast. Bummer. Sombody mentioned earlier The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. Fantastic show! The writing and the plots were hilarious. Who can ever forget that outlaw...

Capturing the Mood/Help Me Scare the PC's

I second Corsair here. He is playing a human Ranger. Think of that "hulking brute" in very low light in an enraged frenzy. As a human his vision is significantly impaired in such an environment. Even with torches the shadows will be all over the place. Therefore, there is absolutely no way...

    Gross, Horrible Story

LOL!!! What a classic moment. Just curious, did the player have anything to say afterwards?

    Zombie Scenario Survival Test!

Okay, I got 67% which makes me an official survivor. Must of been too compassionate somewhere along the way. However, I did score better than 99% of the people in my age bracket for survival points.

My Old Favourite Book Is My New Favourite Book

You've brought back some forgotten memories, barsoomcore. So I went down to where I have my paperbacks boxed up and there are all my Ace paperbacks of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. If anyone is familiar with the original Judges Guild's City State of the Invincible Overlord it sure reads like...

    What about Parents?

Well when I first started playing back in the ol' 1E days my dad would just roll his eyes ands say, "you guys are nuts." My mom basically was silent. I guess what helped was when I introduced my brother and my friends to the game over a Thanksgiving break from college they devoured it...

    recommend short stories?

I agree with Mark on Bradbury. Great read after all these years. Even his novel The Martian Chronicles is comprised of short stories. Have you considered H.P. Lovecraft's works? Tons of short stories and unlike most anything else out there.

Dungeon Siege (Microsoft Games): Ever played?

Though linear and extremely hack & slash I enjoyed the game and I really enjoyed the graphics. It will never make classic status but if you liked Diablo, NOX, and Divine Divinity then you should like this game. However, I found I could only play through it twice and that was about it. Still...

Coto Goes Back To Trek Roots

Yes! This is some of the best news to come out of the Trek Universe in years.

Iuz (eye-ooze) or St. Cuthbert (cuth-bert) battle

Yes, Iuz is one slimy and calculating entity, but I got to go with Cuthbert here. That stance disciplinarian won't take "no" for an answer. He'd wear down old Iuz, wacking him about his head with his handy-dandy cudgel.

    Star Trek XI: Romulan Wars

I couldn't have said it better, Hand of Evil. B&B have got to go. The only thing that needs to be done is to flush because the franchise has been in the toilet for too many years under their leadership.

    Good big fantasy city maps?

Do yourself a BIG favor and do a Google search for the old Judges Guild's "City State of the Invincible Overlord" based on 1E (called CSIO; also do NOT get the old Mayfair Games version). It might say revised but that is okay. It has what you are looking for and the maps were made for...

Scarred Lands: Ask the Sage [This keeps up, I'm gonna need a bigger notebook!]

You're welcome! And is it just me, Nightfall, or have you been noticing what I have been noticing: A lot of emphasis on Undead as well as demons, daemons, and devils in more recent print? Don't get me wrong, people can use whatever they want. I truly like the tremendous variety that...

Scarred Lands: Ask the Sage [This keeps up, I'm gonna need a bigger notebook!]

Okay, that makes sense concerning Kadum's blood and its effects. I was thinking along those lines. And I should have worded my last post as "since no one is asking you questions at the moment..." :) Oh, I do have another question or two. I was looking through the CC- Revised and I did...

An undead invasion topples civilization, then what?

Very neat idea. I wish I could play in your campaign. I think it would be cool to start them off trying to escape from the city. Perhaps you have this planned out but your post wasn't clear. An added twist might be that the people that brought them back think of them as heros but perhaps the...

Scarred Lands: Ask the Sage [This keeps up, I'm gonna need a bigger notebook!]

Nightfall, I am not a real stickler for details -- except when it comes to geography, ocean currents, winds, etc. I like to have these make sense. Why? I am not fully sure! But I think when these are in sinc it makes for greater believability. Anyway, as I study Termana I...

Is it cheating for a GM to use a published adventure?

Can you say "obsessive-compulsive" need to control? Or maybe it is narcissism. I can't reaally add to what has already been said except to say show him this thread.
