Getting tired of hearing "Grognard" and "Nostalgia"

One common definition of "Grognard" is someone who prefers older editions of the game to newer ones. So, if you prefer Pathfinder etc to 4e, that by definition makes you a Grognard.

Personally I have a rather distinct dislike for pre-gens. Maybe that's in part due to being from the old school days where the starter kits started out with taking you through character generation (Though it's not just an old school thing either since the new redbox does just that), but it's...

Gencon: Any non-Essentials content coming up?

The Thief in my game uses Acrobatic trick as his primary trick. He uses it to do wall-runs, bounce over obstacles, etc, in conjuction with other characters to flank. Tactical Trick makes getting CA easy, but if you can get it through flanking, skills like Acrobatic trick are better (+2 damage...

I still think the ideal way to introduce a new player is by letting them create their character from the Essentials sources. It just simplifies and streamlines the whole process from character generation to playing the game that IMO Essentials is how 4e should have released in the first place.

That is so weird, I've not at all had that issue with old D&D players. Really the biggest hangups I've seen is the change of Fort/Ref/Will to defenses instead of saves, removal of THAC0, etc... And usually just telling them up front "4e changes a lot to make D&D a more tactical game" and...

D&D 4E Do you really want Greyhawk and Dragonlance for 4e

This. So very much this. It felt hard to describe any kind of legitimate threat to Faerun that the characters could face, while knowing if the threat was big enough one of the many godlike heros of Faerun would take notice.

Gencon: Any non-Essentials content coming up?

Kind of an aside, just to try and clarify my stance because I can see a semantics issue brewing hehe...I think we're using 2 different definitions of "complex". One definition is "having many interconnected parts", which of course adding more parts makes it more complex. Another definition is...

Gencon: Any non-Essentials content coming up?

Disclaimer, I'm not so much disagreeing as clarifying what I meant. =) Indeed, but most of the content when creating a character won't even get looked at. If someone decides to play a Thief...every Dragon article, PHB, character option, etc that doesn't pertain to the Thief automatically...

Gencon: Any non-Essentials content coming up?

Except it doesn't complicate the game, or add a steeper learning curve. The game plays the same overall as it always did, except that the higher percentage of Essentials characters there are in the game, the simpler, smoother, and faster it plays. It'd be like saying that every Dragon article...

Gencon: Any non-Essentials content coming up?

I have to wholeheartedly disagree there. It's a series of new character options that in no way, shape, or form complicates older character options. Someone playing 4e from the beginning can have a new player join with an Essentials character without having to learn anything new...it's...

Gencon: Any non-Essentials content coming up?

I kinda find it amusing that while some in this thread are trying to assert that Essentials somehow makes playing more complicated, there's another thread started where someone is complaining that it makes the game too simple. =)

    Is essentials basically...

It's handled very well though. Essentials is basicly a streamlining of things after a couple years of seeing the game at work and figuring out what needs fixed. (IMO, Essentials is how 4e should have been released in the first place...it just plays so much better.) And it's really only a few...

    Moment of Glory

That right there causes more imbalances in a game than any one daily power. 4E is just not equipped well to deal with the 5 minute combat workday.

Gencon: Any non-Essentials content coming up?

Switching from the older classes to Essentials classes caused our group to be able to go from 3 encounters in a 4 hour session to 5 or 6 encounters. The simplicity of the Essentials classes led to much less of people studying their powers trying to decide what to use, and that's sped up...

    Moment of Glory

Only in one fight maximum a day. Most of the time those creatures have no difficulty. And in that one fight a day where MoG would get used, there are a host of other dailies getting used as well which leads to a DM needing to step up the difficulty/damage/etc to challenge the party.

    Moment of Glory

Yep, I'd agree with mediocre. (And nearly always if you ask someone how they're doing, and they go "eh, I'm fine"...that's what they mean, so that's kinda how I used the word hehe). I guess my point is that every DM has the tools available to keep encounters challenging with MoG's existance...

    Moment of Glory

"Not worth nerfing" is kinda part of what I meant by "fine". It's not perfect...but not especially broken either. Yeah, it's an "I win" button against level 1 encounters...as are many other dailies. And I've never seen it used against a level 1 encounter...it's always saved for the big...

The 3 options I listed are all generally stuff I do in encounters anyways, MoG or not.

    Moment of Glory

If it's an encounter that would actually cause the cleric to use MoG, you still have options: 1) Let the minions use assists to let the BBEGs big hits land easier (You should be doing this even without MoG...it's probably the most useful thing they can do a lot of times. 2) Give your BBEG an...

    Moment of Glory

I really don't see the need for nerfing this one. It approaches borderline "too good" at really low levels, but even with first level characters it's just not hard to build encounters that can handily overcome DR 5. There are level 2 brutes that do 2d6+6 or 3d6+6 damage.
