    Sandbox gaming

This is probably certainly a comment on semantics, because the overall post I agree with, so I'm not really disagreeing here...just phrasing something a different way that might open up some minds hehe. But...I think there can be a lot of railroads in a sandbox...what makes it a sandbox is that...

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

Slightly inaccurate, since several classes in the Essentials books have dailies etc just like in the regular books.

    A Paladin Problematic

Nah, you're being far more flippant...he's right, it's very easy to work around that power, and he's given several legitimate, serious ideas on how to do so. Off the top of my head, I thought of probably half a dozen encounter ideas to accomplish this, and with a little effort could probably...

How do do Paragon Tier Adventuring?

This is exactly what I thought when I read that idea for a plot outline. If I were to adopt something like that, I would mix it up. Some ideas include: Have the NPC they resurrect be not who they think (either a bad guy, or someone who was once a hero in his prime but no longer able/willing to...

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

Except, resource management is part of classes in Essentials just like in non-Essentials. Classes like the Slayer/Knight with only some Encounter powers are the minority it seems; Daily powers are very much a part of Essentials. And yes, there were some cool ideas, I'm glad Essentials did add...

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

Fortunately, it seems there are a lot of classes in Essentials that have Daily powers, and all of them have Encounter powers. =) (Some of the Daily powers for the Cavalier in HotFK are pretty sick for instance.)

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

I just don't see it. The "Essentials" name is just for marketing...I quite believe that without that marketing attempt, the rules would still be the same as they are now, and instead of HotFL we'd have a PHB4, etc.

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

For that matter, I've never thought that every class and build should be 100% multiclass-able with everything else. I like the idea of having some classes be different enough with their own set of quirks that make them stand separate from the rest, and options like that have existed in some...

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

That may be the case, but that's an entirely different topic than Essentials, seeing as the rules updates have been happening and would continue to happen whether or not Essentials existed.

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

I agree, except I'd also add that the analogy equally applies to Martial Power, PHB2, PHB3, etc. They all add to the game in the same way, and can be mixed and matched depending on what you want. It's all part of the same game, with the same rules.

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

That doesn't make Essentials "Not compatible"; there's a Soreror article this month that is pretty equally non-usable for my present Sorceror. Being compatible doesn't mean that every build has to have all their features apply to every other build. Hell, there are Ranger paragon paths in...

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

The 4e PHB with current errata = essentials with current errata. It's all the same rules, the 4e PHB is simply out of date. That's why the new Rules Compendium rocks right now even if you don't use any other essentials stuff - it's all the original 4e rules brought up to date.

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

4e and essentials is all the same rules. It's all 4e.

So, how many are avoiding Essentials?

Yep. IMO, every table should have the Essentials Rules Compendium now, because it's the most current rules in book form (and laid out very neatly). The Monster Vault pretty much replaced the MM1 here when designing encounters (it absolutely blows away the MM1 in monster balance). And we treat...

    Living Forgotten Realms minion variants

In the games I run, it depends on what the minions are for that particular encounter. Sometimes I like to just throw in encounters that let the players feel tough, with lots of minions that just fall over easy, and in those cases, I kinda ignore the exp budget on minions (because I agree that...

D&D 4E Is Essentials Compatible with Old School 4ed?

Whether or not each class is intended to be multiclassed with each other is an entirely different question than whether or not 4e and essentials is all compatible. Fact is, 4e and Essentials *are* 100% compatible. Essentials is just a marketing term after all...they could have released the new...

D&D 4E Is Essentials Compatible with Old School 4ed?

Its every bit as compatible as a PHB4 would be.

    D&D 4E I miss 4E

I'm not surprised at all. If it was crap they were releasing, I'd be surprised, but so far it's been quite a bit of really good stuff.

    I love The Rules Compendium!

It might help to point out something that even though it's been stated, is easy to miss - Essentials is purely a marketing phrase. Everything that makes up Essentials is still purely 4th edition, but just with a marketing push as far as what new players should look for first when jumping into...
