Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Let me repeat, they are NOT about gaining personal power. If they DO gain it in the course of adventuring, it's mainly because they now have better connections to their god, which, BTW, can also happen with someone who remains cloistered. I see NO problem with a cloistered cleric who is level...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Also, when I said "there are no monks in this world", I also said "make another character choice". This to mean that what doesn't exist in my world is the Monk CLASS.

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

OMG! Let me clear things out definitely: 1 - There ARE monks in my campaign world. 2 - They ARE cloistered. 3 - They are NOT the monk class as specified in the PHB. 4 - They are better described as the Cleric class. 5 - They USUALLY don't go out adventuring. So, what I was saying is that...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Only if the supernatural association was with the devil. If the association was with God (as healing would be considered), the person would probably be proclaimed a saint. Otherwise, how could people understand the curing of people by Christ as something good. And no, I do not retract my quote...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Have to disagree again. Gaining levels is a measure of personal power and connection to your God, not secular power. A D&D cleric can be level 20 and still be a wanderer.

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Uh, you got yourself confused again. When I said monks did exist in my world (as a cloistered bunch of guys), NOWHERE did I say they where like the eastern monks, just cloistered. They are priests. And I believe the Cleric character class perfectly describes one of these monks that decides to...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Okay, now you got yourself confused. The term "crucified' was used in a non-specific way. I didn't mean crucifiction per se, but death in any of many ways. I do NOT play in the european middle-ages. I DM in a world loosely based upon it. As I said before, I do not make my players suffer...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

No, I would say: "Monks do not exist in this world. Please make another character choice."

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

The absolute size of the dragons does not change the fact that dragons did exist in the european late middle-ages fantastic world. The fact that european middle-ages sorcerers did not hurl fireballs does not change the fact that they existed in said fantastic world. I most certainly don't root...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

But you are forgetting that people who "knew" God better in the european middle-ages DID gain personal power. With knowledge (which usually translated itself into the writing of books), the secular power of a priest or monk grew. They could become cardinals, bishops and pope after all. My point...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Sorry, I forgot to add the smiley at the end. :) But if that's your opinion, I'm cool with that. just don't tell me that an eastern monk would be walking around in the european middle-ages without being crucified at one point or another. Oh, okay, you are willing to administer a very healthy...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Appearances are often deceiving. I offer complete freedom of interpretation for INDIVIDUAL role-players. But assembling a complete order of people who think non-standard goes against my inner feeling of how my setting should be built.

Re: Re: Re: Monky Monk Monk If that is the case, I fully apologize.

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Strange. You just gave us an almost-perfect description of how the european late middle-ages saw the world of the fantastic. Except, that is, for the eastern monks.

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

The problem is that, in my worlds at least, personal perfection is not something the clergy aspires to. They want (like most western early and late middle-ages monks) understanding of their god, not of themselves. The aristotelic approach, of the early and late middle-ages in europe, to the...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Re: Monky Monk Monk That is probably the worst generalization I ever heard. You are basically saying all societies fit a particular mold and thus can be easily categorized. If you didn't notice, people have been trying to do that since the sixteenth century and have failed miserably at it.

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

Because, maybe, fire kills any armored person in real life, and bare hands, uh, do not? Wizardry is much easier to imagine, for me at least, than a guy breaking through an opponent's plate and mail with his hand.

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

This I can perfectly understand, and completely agree with. If you planned your wolrd from the ground up as a place where "martial" arts are common, more power to you.

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

I am not abiding in generalizations. I am fully aware that christendom was very varied throughout the european middle-ages, and that several religious orders with differing ideas were founded and prospered. What i am arguing is that none of these orders contained ANY "martial" artists, as...

Hey its a new poll! Do you allow monks in your campaign?

I believe that was my whole point. I have no adventuring monks in my campaign. Monks that keep to the monasteries are fine, and they live for meditation, not bashing. In my campaign, most clerics do NOT go out adventuring. They keep to the temples or to the surrounding communities. Simply...
