    Spell Resistance Question

In response to anon's question: It appears that a very literal interpretation of the SR rule is favored by the majority on these boards, i.e. if you cast the spell, it can effect you (circumventing SR). So whether it is instantaneous or not does not seem to matter.

    SR for creatures (urgent)...

This might be the exception more than the rule, but IIRC from the MM, drow elves have SR 11 + class level, so they do gain more resistance as they advance. Hope this helps.

    Spell Resistance Question

Lela and Ridley's Cohort, Again, just to make sure you understand where I'm coming from: I'm not "arguing" that SR would apply in the situation outlined in my original post, nor am I trying to make up new rules or change people's minds. In the middle of the gaming session, after a quick review...

    Spell Resistance Question

Thanks for everyone's input--I really appreciate it. Just to clarify a couple of points from Lela's post: Flame Strike is an area spell, not a "Target: You" spell or "Range: Touch" spell. The cleric just cast it in the next hex (5' away). I only used the phrase "essentially on himself" because...

    Spell Resistance Question

Yeah, I read that. It says "A creature's spell resistance never interferes with its own spells, items, or abilities." But I interpreted that as meaning at the time of casting or using abilities, not when a spell effect comes back on the caster.

    Spell Resistance Question

So the 10th level drow cleric is finally cornered and a couple of PC's are beatin' him down. As a last resort, he casts Flame Strike (10' radius, 10d6 damage, reflex for half) essentially right on himself, knowing that the PC's will get hit. The cleric's Spell Resistance is 21. So the spell goes...

    Different sizes of Shillelagh

Simplicity is a high priority for me, so I'd lean toward option #1; however, I can see your point. Maybe you could just have two variations: Small or medium sized: 1d10 Large or greater: 2d6 It's the +1 enhancement that seems most useful for my druid character. This is a low level spell, so...

    5' Step Clarification

Re: question B), the reason I thought it would provoke an AoO is because of how I'm reading the entry in the PHB p. 122. It says that if all you do is move, the square you start out in is not considered threatened and there are no AoO's. But it then says, "If you move into another threatened...

    Medieval Reach Weapons

I'm certainly no expert when it comes to medieval weaponry. I'm looking for names/descriptions of reach weapons. These can even be less common names of the reach weapons already listed in the PHB. I'm guessing that there are lots of "spear" type weapons that were common a few hundred years...

    5' Step Clarification

I can't believe I'm asking this question after playing 3e since it came out, but here goes: A) If you take a 5' step when your move both starts and ends in your opponent's threatened area, that still does not provoke an AoO, correct? B) On the same topic, if you leave your opponent's...

How many of you use the Identify material component?

I try to avoid having too many house rules, but when my players told me in our last session that Identify would take hours to cast, my reply was, "From now on, it's 8 minutes." Identifying magic items for experienced magic-users should be a simple process--3e seems to make the experience far too...

    "Too Precise" Spell Effects

Thanks for everyone's input--there are some good suggestions here, especially the "pick a hex and go" idea. Implementing this idea will speed up play (always good), or it will have the randomness I'm looking for. I'll make a decision before our next gaming session whether I go with that or use...

    "Too Precise" Spell Effects

Seems like this has been discussed, but I can't find it on the boards. Sometimes it is a little irritating (IMO) when that killer Fireball blast does 40 points of damage on the big, bad Troll, but the fighter he was in melee with is not affected at all. Are there any rules you apply to deal with...

    Wildshape Questions

I don't have MotW yet, though I've read through the Wildshape section. Just looking for a couple of clarifications: 1. Can you use your "human feats" while Wildshaped (e.g. Expertise)? 2. If you're currently under the effect of a spell like Greater Magic Fang or Bull's Strength, and then you...

    Cleric Spell Question

I was looking at the 3rd level Cleric spell Magic Circle Against Evil. This magic circle (primarily providing an AC bonus and saving throw bonus) applies to all PC's within the 10' radius of the spell, and not just to the Cleric, correct? There may be other spells where this question applies...

Help with rules for Arena game

I'm no expert on this type of battle setting, but I wouldn't allow more than 15 seconds between character actions. This would keep the chaotic nature of an all-out battle intact.

    Abstract or Miniature combat

Before 3e we would just draw a rough outline of the battlefield on grid paper or white board, with no minis. Since 3e we've only used miniatures on a battlemat, and about once per gaming session (usually during a big battle), someone will say, "How would we ever have done this without minis?!"...

    Dwarven Resistance to Magic

Thanks for the input--this helps clear things up. I guess the only question is if there has been an official ruling on the +2 on All Saves vs +2 on Will Saves for dwarves.

    Dwarven Resistance to Magic

According to the PHB, Dwarves get a +2 to saves against spells and spell-like effects (IIRC). If a Wizard casts a spell like Command on a Dwarf, it seems obvious that the +2 would apply. What about spells like Lightning Bolt, Magic Missile, Web, Fireball, Melf's Acid Arrow, etc. where there's a...
