D&D 5E Does the "Friends" cantrip need a fix?

And by use friends, you mean literally use a friend. Who takes the Help action. To give you advantage. With no drawbacks, like the shopkeeper thinking that exchange was suspicious and wondering why. If you're planting something, stealing something, etc you don't want attention. Unless you're...

D&D 5E Does the "Friends" cantrip need a fix?

Sounds like you just answered the question that Friends _does_ suck, and that games should change it enough to make it not suck. I agree!

D&D 5E Does the "Friends" cantrip need a fix?

People check hundred dollar bills fairly often. And for any amount of money that would using Friends on for Bartering, it'd be enough gold for a merchant to both check for illusions and take at least one minute. It's more believable for basic sensible precautions to take place. Rakshasa are...

D&D 5E Does the "Friends" cantrip need a fix?

That's _incredibly_ tricky to time that well. After all, who said you weren't making a check at every point prior to that? And, again, why is the shopkeeper not reacting to you casting a spell? Bartering is a time consuming process. If you want Friends to work on a barter, you've got to be in a...

Know what works even better? An ally who just Helps you. Gives you advantage, with no other requirement. Good cop, Bad cop, doesn't even matter.

D&D 5E Does the "Friends" cantrip need a fix?

I was trying to do the enchantment route (Friends, Suggestion) until I found out that would never fly at the tables I ended up with. So, yay for your table :)

D&D 5E Does the "Friends" cantrip need a fix?

Sorry, but they shot you when you started casting. Also, it's only advantage, not mind control, so it doesn't change their perception. Oh and it wore off when you were half a block away bringing the entire garrison looking for a jedi. Mission failed So, yeah, I only wish it were that cool. ;)

D&D 5E Does the "Friends" cantrip need a fix?

TLDR version: Do any or all of the following - 1) Extend the duration to 10 minutes 2) Explicitly make the casting subtle, woven into your speech 3) Make the target suspicious of the entire interaction and realize he's been magically meddled with afterwards, but not innately hostile.

D&D 5E Does the "Friends" cantrip need a fix?

Friends is a pretty awful cantrip at anything you'd think it was intentionally designed to do, though it does have a couple very specific uses. 1) Instant response checks, like getting someone to open a door for you, create a distraction, or potentially to secure a surprise round. 2) Disguised...

D&D 5E Thoughts Regarding the Number of Attuned Items

I'll just assume you understand what I mean and are tangentally having fun :)

D&D 5E Thoughts Regarding the Number of Attuned Items

Nah, that doesn't do it at all. Even just in terms of requiring an attunement process, because that means you can't just toss magic items back and forth.

D&D 5E How fun are warlocks?

I've enjoyed my warlock more than most classes. I'm the party face (good Cha + skills, many faces, beast speech, spells), scout (imp), crowd control (spells, repelling blast), and a solid damage dealer (more for some battles than others). Hex's concentration requirement often kills it, since I...

D&D 5E Thoughts Regarding the Number of Attuned Items

13th Age can get like that :) I've got one game where treasure distribution is primarily done by who is happy with the quirks of an item, rather than its mechanical benefit.

D&D 5E Thoughts Regarding the Number of Attuned Items

I suspect you could make an interesting case for splitting items into minor and major attunements. Then either give out a set number of each, or count majors as 2 or 3, and increase the number of attunements available. That's probably more detail than they were looking for on the item system...

    World's Largest Dungeon Maps

That site does have a few huge jpegs on it, like http://www.james.neetersoft.com/wld/wld_region_a_pr.jpg - if that's not usable, then I'm not sure what to suggest. I've had good luck before with Maptools and wotc predone tiles. Or really it's mostly basic grid for WLD, could just use whatever...

D&D 5E Thoughts Regarding the Number of Attuned Items

We've found the attunement rules are useful for getting the silent accepting people to take some treasure over the boisterous needy people. "I'm already at 3 attunements, I'd have to give up something to take that" "She's at 1. Guess it's hers then" While we've had people be cognizant of the...

AMA (Tuesday noon, April 28): Mike Selinker, your 2015 ENnie Awards host, ex-D&D creative director, and creator of the RPG/card game hybrid Apocrypha

I haven't played Axis and Allies in twenty years; I used to play it regularly with my brother (his copy). Some friends brought up playing it again. I then noticed you'd worked on a revision of it, and read about your many changes. I also noticed there were a few revisions done afterwards. So...

D&D 5E Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Expect table variation there. Mind you, I'd also expect table variation on what happens to someone with an aid spell on them, takes damage, then has the aid dispelled. Honestly, we found the opposite to be true. At low level, the cleric is as tough or tougher as anyone else, and the monsters...

D&D 5E Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

The oddest thing is that it's generally to our party's advantage if they go for the wizard, warlock, or druid, instead of the fighter. Lots of flashy arcane and technically the source of our healing, I guess? The fighter usually is more fragile, and does more damage than I am, or even the mage...
