I think your DM just wanted you to know that What's done is done. But most of the time the DM forgot about the abilities and full potential of monster, sometimes he do willingly to make you survive when you're gonna die.

You should let the npc die. If you do something fishy to make him live, the players could start to think that you try to control the NPC life and death whatever action the player had taken.
