D&D General Time spent on D&D outside of actual play

I spend no less than twice the time prepping as the group spends at the table. At times it could be at least triple.

D&D General What Is Magic, Even?

"Magic" is actually technology being used by aliens :alien:. To us primitive humans it seems like magic. :p

    D&D General Define Problem

Defining problems is always going to be largely subjective. Even when someone openly states there is no bias there most certainly always will be regardless. We base everything we evaluate on past experiences and always will because that is the only mechanism we have to do so. Often what is...

    D&D (2024) 6E When?

And you may ultimately be correct that we see a completely new release in a span ranging 10 - 13 years. The culmination of previous versions of the game ultimately led us to 5E. It is the progression to 5th edition and my assumption (perhaps misguided) that each new release leads closer to a...

    D&D (2024) 6E When?

When we look at the history of all the D&D versions released to date, the releases span between roughly 3 years (v3.0 - v3.5) and 12 years (v1 to v2). I would expect something in between that time frame going strictly by the track record we have. My personal opinion is that 5E could last...

Real Life Places That Inspire You As A DM

You can get a lot of inspiration from many of the ancient places featured on the show Ancient Aliens. There are many pyramid civilizations, temples, etc. Many are in some obscure locations like underground tunnels/caverns, hard to reach mountainous areas, or even water sites. There are even a...

Amazon ratings of Ghosts of Saltmarsh

From my observations of the Amazon reviews of 5E adventure and rule books, a good bit of the low star reviews have to do with shipment packaging and handling

D&D 5E How many classes in multiclass is to much?

As a DM I try to allow players to do what they want within RaR and a few minor house or campaign rules and do my best not to judge. As a PC, for me personally, multi-classing at all is too much. Call me a Class Purist? It's just that in 5E you can make the classes pretty diverse as it is (at...

How often does your party use a potion of healing

It varies depending on the campaign, party, and encounter. For the current campaign it's probably in the neighborhood of 1-2 per game session on average without a primary healer in the party. Our average 4 - 5 hour session averages one major encounter with some sessions having a minor...

Why are tieflings so popular? How did they manage to outcompete all the other wacky races to win their place in mainstream D&D?

My first thought on this is not all Teifling characters are female and I wouldn't want to visualize a mail Tiefling in bikini chain mail but that's just me. A more serious thought is that perhaps it's just fun for people to experiment outside perceived societal norms. The farther the better...

XGtE: are any of those flavor magic items any good?

My Battlemaster recently used Heward's Handy Spice pouch to season some Axebeak roasted by the fire after the party took down a charging flock of them.

What's your opinion on "Save or Die" effects?

I think a true "save or die" is better-suited for an end game encounter which the party knows is the end of the campaign or, perhaps the end of a campaign chapter. In that case they should realize this is a possibility going into the encounter and will likely come up with a strategy to counter...

D&D 5E A Collection of D&D Class Build Guides - Wiki Thread the Second

I believe the idea was to have all of the guides linked here so I doubt you will find any elsewhere on this site.

    Your most used accessories?

Since I now use it in-game as well as to keep track of things out of game, I have to say my laptop. After that I would have to say my Chessex Megamat or my GameScience dice or my various minis.

Ritual Spells - do they need to be a separate category?

There are some interesting points raised here but I don't feel that all out of combat solutions (or in some cases combat preparation) should potentially be solved without any tangible cost. At your table you can always do as the player collective wishes if you feel it works for you.

D&D 5E Preferred DM vs PC game type.

If your party is a bunch of "good-guys" it only makes sense that you will have to scheme some evil as a DM. For me personally I would have to say I do enjoy playing an evil NPC as a DM if for no other reason than to help make a fun and exciting campaign for a group of do-gooders but not so much...

    Share and Share Alike

This is typically how it is done in my games as well whether I am DM or PC. However in a recent session, I had a player (Bladelock) decide to do a search for loot while the rest of the party battled it out with a wraith. Of course, he found the shiny magic sword and decided he was keeping it...
