D&D 5E The Fiddly Bits (That Still Get My Newer Players)

Yes, Inspiration seems to always be forgotten in my campaigns as well. Sometimes we just have trouble keeping track of multiple effects and what we can and can't do while under the influence of those effects. In the last session I actually had an NPC afflicted with 4 different effects at the...

    Running WotC Adventure Question

"Do you find after completing the encounters you are running short on XP to make the levels you are supposed to be?" To answer this question directly, I say yes in most cases. Typically there isn't enough XP there if you simply go with what's in the campaign book in my for those that I've run...

    D&D 5E 3rd party publishers and 5E

I've not experienced any lack of character options nor have I heard from any player's at my tables expressing such a lack. I do often incorporate 3rd party encounters or mini adventures from the DMG or Drive-Thru RPG into my campaigns.

D&D 5E what version of the Ranger do you use?

I've had a Ranger in the last 3 campaigns I've run and not one of them had buyer's remorse using the PHB base class version. One was a Hunter while the other two were both Gloomstalkers.

    D&D 5E Kids playing dnd?

I found the Starter Set campaign Lost Mine of Phandelver worked just fine for a group of 10 year olds. They had the option of using the pre-generated characters that came with the set but they all wanted to roll up their own. I tried not to bog them down too much with details but give them...

    Spring's D&D Release Will Be Ship-Themed

Really? I'm playing it wrong? Because I'm not inspired by pirate themes in the game?

    Spring's D&D Release Will Be Ship-Themed

Pulp pastiche, genres were never disputed or introduced in my original thread nor does it influence my original opinion. It still doesn't feel D&D to me which is all I was trying to say. It feels more like its own genre to me.

    Spring's D&D Release Will Be Ship-Themed

That's an interesting take. I was under the impression I could feel what I like in whatever way I wish. So yes, for me, in my own unique personal perspective as offered, it really is "just a matter of subjective feeling."

Not to me but to each their own.

D&D 5E Elven trance and long rests

2 hours max seems a reasonable limitation to me for a watch during a Long Rest and is consistent with the non-trance PCs. The trance feature is of negligible value the way I house-ruled it but it allows the PCs to keep it for thematic effect. Also, it seems like incidents where someone might...

Give Me Your Dragon Heist Tips

I am reading through this now for a campaign sometime in the future. It has a lot of great ideas but it really needs to be buttoned up by the DM in a lot of places so I plan to do what I normally do running a 5E published adventure. Do a lot of research on the web to get ideas for customizing...

D&D 5E Elven trance and long rests

In my last campaign session, we had an elf PC with 1 level of exhaustion take 3rd watch on a long rest. Of course I asked for the Perception check for the watch to be made with disadvantage. The PC argued that with trance, she had already completed her Long Rest and therefore should not have...

    Spring's D&D Release Will Be Ship-Themed

I've never been drawn to "ship-themed" adventures. Perhaps I associate such a thing of working thematically like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies which I really don't associate with D&D? I suppose if I had additional inspiration and gave it more thought, it could be fun?

Use This Flowchart To Choose Your D&D Class

For the first time ever, my character may actually die during character creation.

Tough DM call - how would you run it?

From the situation you have described, with the player apparently very invested in the character, I think it should be a cumulative solution largely between that player and the DM. The solution should satisfy the player that owns said character but also making sense to the other player...

D&D 5E What is this villain's next step?

I should have explained better. The magical artifacts are not the McGuffin per se' but rather meant to supplement 'forged alliances, consensus-building, establishing an army (or henchmen to start), and other aspects of "domain management"'. I just haven't thought through all the details yet...

"How do I beat the Matt Mercer effect?"

You don't "beat the Matt Mercer effect". Nowadays, with Critical Role as popular as it is, if you are running a game with new players, you pretty much need to survey them in advance to find out if they really expect the game to go the way of the show. They need to be made to understand that...

What Are Your DM New Year's Resolutions?

Continue to find new ideas, supplements, and DM techniques to ensure the group continues to have fun. If the end goal isn't fun for all participants, then I fail as a DM before I begin.
