If characters can't die, you are no longer playing a game, you are collaborating in story telling - which is fine if that's your goal. Otherwise, if it was my character, and you backpedaled on his death, I'd stop playing.
5E is an improvement on 4e, and inferior to every other edition. Beyond that, it plays like someone's house rules for 3e and is indistinguishable from a dozen other D20 clones. It brings nothing new to the table, and is not worth purchasing, other than for collecting.
Then don't.
I love AD&D clerics and I usually only prepare one or two healing spells to keep someone alive in an emergency. Most healing is done during down time. I have never in 35 years seen anyone forced to prepare healing spells.
No, Morrus specifically said "RETURNING to D&D." He has since edited his post to specify 5E. I can neither read minds nor predict the future. It's a failing of mine.
I never downgraded to 3.5. IMO, they fixed a couple things and broke a whole lot more. But then, it wasn't an attempt to fix anything, but rather a grab at purse strings.
I could never get past the stupid camera in NWN 2. I fought the camera more than I did the bad guys so I gave up on that game before getting out of the first town.
