Hillside Games, Asheville: The Unfriendly Local Game Store

Sounds like the store got tired of "prices ... competitive with Amazon" that eventually sunk their competitor and took some unfortunate pre-emptive action to prevent the turd from resurfacing in the bowl. I can totally sympathize, but obviously don't agree with their actions. Everyone needs to...

    Creating a retailer-friendly Kickstarter project

We'll mark up the candy a couple bucks to improve the margin. That's not really an option on gaming items.

3rd Horseman of the Apocalypse: 4E Hits the Bargain Bin

Dungeons & Dragons is pretty much an evergreen product for most game stores, be it AD&D, 2nd Edition, 4th Edition or Pathfinder. I know we'll be stocking 4th edition D&D until we can no longer get it. Even a "bad" edition of D&D sells better than any non-D&D RPG.

Pathfinder 1E Richmond, CA - Pathfinder Sandbox Game

New Pathfinder campaign begins Sunday March 4th, from 5pm-9pm in Richmond, CA, at my house. We'll be playing every other week as regularly as possible. It's a home brew sandbox campaign starting at 1st level. So what does that mean? It means there is a wide world to explore, but also that there...

D&D 4E Is PF combat any faster than 4e?

Combat Speed I do think it's about player experience although I also think 4E is more straightforward in rules interpretation. It does what it says it does, end of story (mostly). My 4E combats were twice as fast, and I really only play Pathfinder now.

    City Mechanics?

Funny how I'm perfectly happy to "wing it" when they find a gold mine, but I require a sub-system to determine how it effects the city. This is good stuff and I'll be sure to bookmark this.

    City Mechanics?

I'm developing a sandboxy Pathfinder campaign for my group centered around a large town, a potential city-state, that's on the verge of collapse. Using the GameMastery Guide, the town has the attributes of Hunted, Insular and Superstitious. The town is like the main NPC patron in the campaign...

    Unusual Encounter Advice

I've got an unusual scenario in a D&D (Pathfinder) adventure I'm working on. The PCs liberate the dying god of misfortune, an emaciated, almost spent creature with no followers. He's on his last legs. I was thinking it would be interesting to create an end encounter that is entirely overwhelming...

    Paying for Game Day

Sorry about that. Information on this event was hard to get as a store owner and the commitment to running it was higher than normal, because of the unusual format, meaning we had to get buy-in from or RPGA volunteers to run it. It eventually went off and the group enjoyed it, but the calendar...

    Retailer's Stance on PDF Deals

There are as many game store owner perspectives on this as there are game stores. "FLGS" is not Wal-Mart or Amazon, it's usually someone who loves the hobby and has sunk their life savings into supporting it, and possibly making a meager living at it in the process. You certainly don't owe them...

    Retailer's Stance on PDF Deals

About the Distributors There is a lot of anger directed at the game distributors. Here's how RPGs generally get to the game stores: Wizards of the Coast. The only "major" direct to retailer company will ship books directly to the store with a 50% margin for the retailer. Wizards makes 50%, and...

    Retailer's Stance on PDF Deals

That's probably true of most role-players and when we didn't have much game space at our first store, RPGs were a solid seller, proportional with everything else. When we moved to a much bigger store, with lots of game space, RPG sales didn't budge, while the other games skyrocketed in sales by...

D&D 4E Would you buy 4E if it were not open/had no licenses for 3rd party companies?

Store Owner As a store owner, the poll tracks fairly well with my sales. About 80% of my D&D sales are Wizards of the Coast, with about 20% of my D&D sales being third party (D20/OGL). I wrote my own feelings about this as a store owner in my blog here . As a player, I've relied heavily on...

Advertisements for Movies, Video Games, Board Games...but not RPG's?

Marketing Strategy The marketing strategy for D&D 4 is supposedly to first target the existing D&D audience and then focus on new players. For existing players, perhaps they're trying to do a more guerrilla marketing strategy, focusing on electronic mediums and word of mouth. Perhaps they'll go...

Points of Light approach to setting

One thing I would clarify is the PoL model in the design books appear to rely on a collapsed empire, rather than a new world expanded to the fringe. This is important and useful for us because you get ruins, ancient libraries, abandoned structures, and similar adventure fodder. I'm following the...

D&D 3E/3.5 How are You Wrapping Up 3.5?

We're finishing up my home brew campaign with Monte Cook's "Night of Dissolution" by June. Then I've got a home brew 4E alternate Earth campaign I've been working on planned around "Keep on the Shadowfell," hopefully in late June or early July.
