Should I punish my players with a high CR encounter

Release the demon. Show no mercy. You've warned them this thing is out of their league, which is why they needed to stop it from being summoned in the first place. Warn them again, and then let them choose whether to run or die. On the other hand, if they're beneath this thing's notice, there's...

    Mixing Versions?

I played AD&D for years before I realized there were two different versions of it, and that Classic D&D was actually a different game. I still continued to use material from all three interchangeably. Right now, I've figured out that I can't really use material directly, but that it's...

D&D 5E Are you happy with D&D Next so far?

Too soon to tell, but I think it's going in the right direction. I see most of the parts I like about 4e without the parts I don't like. I see the potential for it to have what I liked about Player's Option AD&D and 3.Xe without the overwhelming system bloat and caster dominance. And I see the...

I Like The Simple Fighter [ducks]

I don't think the two are incompatible. The 3.5e Warlock was an excellent class for new players, and it had options-- what it didn't have was a ton of bookkeeping attached to it. So at 1st level, Fighters have two options-- they have Basic Attack and their choice of Special Attack, which they...

    At-Will Magic and Arrows

The way I see it, a crossbow should rely on Dexterity (which everyone benefits from) for attack and damage, do more base damage than magic missile, and have a greater range than magic missile. Magic missile should rely on Intelligence for attack (no auto-hit) and damage, do less base damage...

    D&D 2E As a strategy 4e or 2e on classes

When life doesn't give you lemons... Seriously, split the difference. 2e used lots of kits to differentiate characters of the same class, 4e used lots of classes with subclass options and class feats. The way I see it, 'Theme' is a cross between the 2e kit and, appropriately enough, the 4e...

The classes you would actually want to play poll

Not a big fan of Nine Swords, but I like the idea of the Warblade/Swordsage/Crusader split-- Fighters are smart, Monks are wise, and Cavaliers are compelling. I prefer to see it as the Marshal and Warlord being continuations of the Cavalier.

    At-Will Magic and Arrows

I don't keep track of mundane ammunition as DM. Even for Gunslingers, even though that's supposed to be a part of the class. As PC in 3.X, I always take either Warlock 3 or Soulknife 2/Soulbow 1.

    Druid or Cleric?

I would argue that this Buddhist definition of 'divinity' in this sense does not correspond with the D&D definition of 'divinity', and would be better represented by the Psionic power source-- since it is a kind of 'divinity' that arises from within each of us and all of us, and the goal is to...

    My Notifications Keep Piling Up

It appears to be fixed on my end.

    Druid or Cleric?

Yes, but they're an oxymoron necessitated by the Cleric being the only class capable of serving as a fully functional healer-- now that having a healer is optional, and a healer doesn't have to be a Cleric, that flavor-killing contradiction in terms can finally cease to be. Or, at least, be...

    Druid or Cleric?

I like Primal magic. One of the best things to come out of 4e. Now that we can have Arcane healers, and something else to call nature magic, maybe we can finally put a stake through the heart of atheist Clerics. Divine magic is divine, so if there's no gods involved in it, it must be something...

    Spontaneous blasting

Personally, I'd settle for keeping the reduced damage and removing the proficiency bonus. Sure, you can cast magic missile when you don't have a crossbow-- or don't know how to use one-- but it's like casting knock; the Rogue with thieves' tools does it better and faster.

The monk. It will be mystical most likely

For instance, a number of character options had specific power sources as prerequisites or modified powers of a specific power source. A lot of Dragonborn stuff (since I just got done building a Dragonborn Sorcerer) ties into Arcane and Primal abilities.

The classes you would actually want to play poll

Answered pretty much everything but the pure Martial classes and the Divine classes. I wouldn't mind race-as-class at all-- anything to make racial choice important-- but I never play any of the races listed.

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

The Sioux used shields-- stretched hide over wooden frame. They weren't bulletproof by any means, but bullets were known to deflect off of them fairly regularly.

The monk. It will be mystical most likely

Can't XP you again yet, but me too. I like the idea that some classes use multiple power sources and cover multiple roles-- but I want these things to be explicit, so that they can have rules that tie them together the way that 4e did.

The monk. It will be mystical most likely

There are no rules that make reference to them yet. There's a difference.

    Cantrips as encounter powers?

Requiring an attack roll for magic missile and lowering radiant lance damage to 1d4 + Wisdom would be a good start. Not even 'priest' Clerics should be top-notch snipers. I like the idea of magic missile being 1d4 + ability with multiple attacks at higher levels, ray of frost being 1d4 +...

The monk. It will be mystical most likely

I'm actually really hoping that they're both psionic classes, so that we have two classes using the psionics rules, in different ways, at the same time. It's like having Fighter/Rogue/Warlord, Ranger/Druid, and Wizard/Bard/Warlock all in the core-- it shows the diversity of the power source.
