What defines a theme vs a class vs a background?

Early dev-chatter indicates multiple themes is a given. So an Alchemist/Werewolf would have to choose one at 1st and wait for the other. Ideally, the rules will have an equitable solution for a dual-theme 1st level character... but house-ruling it doesn't seem so difficult either. You get both...

In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

That's where I came up with the idea. I was attempting to modify the FATE rules to accommodate a more D&D-style combat system... and then, because of the specifics of how combat functions in FATE, it occurred to me that Rolemaster-style criticals could be easily incorporated. Imagine a system...

Should Assassin be theme or class?

Apologies. There's been a lot of snark lately. I am losing my capacity to recognize it. What I am trying to say is actually that what the 4e Assassin is-- plus a taste of the AD&D Assassin and Ninja classes-- is what I want in Next.

Should Assassin be theme or class?

Not that I am aware of, no. Did you get a different version of the playtest rules, perhaps?

Should Assassin be theme or class?

You know, I want both. I want a Theme for Rogue based on professional murder. And then I want an Assassin class with mystical shadow powers.

In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

I would love to have a system in which hit points are entirely abstract-- in which strikes that deal hit point damage are negligible wounds, until the strike that reduces you to zero-- and recovered at daily intervals or even faster, but which also contained real injuries for certain grievous...

D&D 5E Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Happened to me all the time before they locked me up, but I never got any XP from it.

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

D&D doesn't account for degree of precision in a strike for damage. Armor as DR effectively makes you immune to minor threats-- which is bad-- and is barely helpful against major threats. If you're trading AC for DR, you're losing.

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

Rolemaster does this really, really well. D&D, not so much.

    6-5 Rule of Three

Not once. Plenty of Dwarf and Halfling Wizards, though. A flat 18 costs entirely too damned much in point buy to get a 16 out of it-- 16 point buy points is almost too much to spend when you're getting a 20 out of it. But maybe I'm the kinda guy the Human racial bonus is for, since I don't do...

    6-5 Rule of Three

Not really a matter of sensitive players, they way I see it. I just think the math just works better on an 'all bonuses all the time' model. It's not like the penalties actually hurt, because people just play classes that don't need that ability score, or if it's a penalty to something everyone...

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

Deliberately sub-optimal armors for people who don't have Heavy Armor proficiency or good Dexterity? Yeah, I guess I can see that-- as long as you're willing to accept it as red-headed stepchild armor that nobody wears if they have a choice. Or if Fighters/Paladins can choose (as a class...

    How should humans be human?

That's why I like Humans as the race that can be any class, and the race that's best at multiclassing-- it isn't that they have greater potential within any particular field, it's that they have greater potential to advance in any field and to pursue more than one. Like the basis behind the...

    Per-Encounter Powers

Take this further, based on the idea of Reserve feats from Complete Mage. As a class feature or a feat or what-have-you, you know some spells. You can cast these spells as cantrips, at-will. You have some pool of vitality that refreshes slowly outside of combat, that you can spend to cast these...

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

Sure. I'm eliminating medium armor for the simple reason that, with heavy armor being 1/2 DEX, there's no conceptual space between light and heavy. Light Natural Armor: Soft Leather: 12 + DEX Light Metal Armor: Brigandine: 13 + DEX Hauberk: 14 + DEX Heavy Natural Armor: Lamellar: 15 + 1/2 DEX...

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

Don't recall Classic off-hand, but in AD&D, the AC adjustment for an 18 DEX was -4 (the equivalent of +4 today)-- assuming that each point less than 18 was one point less, that meant your first AC bonus kicked in at 15. But in AD&D, heavy armor also didn't stop you from getting your Dexterity...

    How should humans be human?

No, but you do realize that any racial ability we grant to Humans is-- again by definition-- a departure from the baseline? If Humans get a bonus feat and a bonus skill, that means that all of the non-Humans technically have a 1 feat/skill penalty when compared to the 'baseline'. If Humans get...

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

This is one area where I feel strongly that D&D should resemble reality, in that wearing armor in combat is always preferable to not wearing armor in combat. The only people who should ever willingly go into combat without armor are people who cannot wear armor at all, or people who need to go...

Separating Attack and Utility Spell Slots

I want to see rituals expanded considerably beyond their use in 4e, but I'm not so certain I want to see all 'utility' effects relegated to ritual status-- sometimes you need to teleport to a specific place today, and sometimes you need to teleport anywhere but here right the Hell now, and the...

    How should humans be human?

I don't think the Humans necessarily must, or should, be the baseline by which everything else is calculated. By definition, that means that Humans are not in any fashion distinct. There should be a hypothetical 'baseline' humanoid to which all PC humanoid races, including Humans, are...
