    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

By this logic you could use mage hand to push yourself while levitated.

    D&D 5E GWM+Longbow

IMO when you use something as an improvised weapon it is, ipso facto, not a weapon. Otherwise you’d apply your proficiency bonus, no? And if it’s not a weapon then it’s not a heavy weapon.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

A good way to make yourself move while levitating!!

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Hah, not a bad use for the spell, if you're actually purchasing something by weight. Cast the spell on the bananas before you bring them to the scale for checkout. (As elf sees more quickly ;))

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Thing is, the technical physics definitions are really different from how they are used in normal language. If you go buy 2 pounds of bananas, you really are thinking of mass. You wouldn't expect them to cost any different on an elevator moving up or down, or something. So I think NASA is just...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Alternatively, we might assume that sometimes the rules use "weight" to refer to mass, as people often do. But that leaves it in our hands to decide when. :)

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

I don't think the present discussion has much relevance to the spell, but I still like to see people the get real-world physics right ;)

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Actually, since planets are orbiting the sun they are weightless, just like an astronaut orbiting the earth.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

On Earth I weigh about 165 lbs. On the moon I weigh about 28 lbs. On Mars I weigh about 62 lbs. I have no idea how much I weigh on a dnd world while I'm being levitated.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

I was curious so I looked up the history of the spell. It has always been 2nd level (except in 4e where it was just a drow racial power). The 5e version seems closest to the 1e version, FWIW.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Levitate a 500 lb object and then move it around with mage hand?

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Be interesting if you could cast the spell in a higher level slot an increase the weight limit.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Neither does it say that the suspended creature has disadvantage on attacks. Spells do what they say, anything either you or I add because of how we picture it is coming from us. But you seem to like your way of reading it, and I wasn't really trying to talk you out of it. Just thought you might...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

The spell is certainly consistent with your interpretation, I'm saying that isn't the only interpretation it is consistent with. Another picture would be that it provides a 5 ft square invisible platform of force for you to stand on, and you can shove the platform around by pushing or pulling on...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

You seem to have a very specific vision of how the spell works, which isn't actually grounded in any of the mechanics given. Of course you're welcome to interpret it that way, or ban the spell if you want. But there's no reason you need to. The spell is supporting you against gravity, there's no...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

That seems like an unnecessary boost to an already strong spell. The target has enough leverage to climb along a surface, it is reasonable that it has enough leverage to attack.

That is correct. Yup, 500 lbs. One of the reasons I kind of wish they spec'd monster weights in the MM.

You mean like: :) https://www.enworld.org/threads/levitate-on-an-unwilling-creature.578966/ It does make the good point that the target can still dodge.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

I agree, for many targets it is really devastating. Though blindness and heat metal are also 2nd level and potential fight-enders. @Morrus, I read that as "if you (the caster) are the target, you can move up or down as part of your move." edit- I misremembered, blindness is save each turn.
