    What are people homebrewing?

Most of PoL is in pre-pdf form atm, but I do have a few google doc teasers to provide a taste of what is to come. Thanks for your interest, and thanks for starting this thread! :) After talking about my condition tracks here, I've realized that it'd be just as easy to shift what may be their...

    What are people homebrewing?

Oh man, I've been in homebrew-land for so long I've started to forget where I diverged from D&D! My arcane source is about light/darkness, charm/fear, illusions, and force effects, for just the reasons you mention. My themes are what 4e calls builds. My encounter-power effects use (save ends)...

    What are people homebrewing?

Yeah, there have been whole weeks when things come up or I was simply unmotivated, and got nothing done. It's a looong process. You know, I don't really know anything about SWSE either, and I wouldn't be surprised if I was beaten to the punch. Some of my condition tracks are simple, like the...

    What are people homebrewing?

No kidding! I've been working on my Points of Light game for almost three years now, and it is so much work! I've gone through varying phases of attention and energy. Currently I am feverishly scrabbling to get it playable -- not four-tiers complete, but playable -- by the new year so I can...

    How do Governments Align?

Thanks for the replies, all. I've been reading for ideas and inspiration! On further reflection, my exemplars will all have exemplary governments -- that is, idealized governments which actually work as ideally intended because the exemplars themselves are exemplary citizens. In the mortal...

    How do Governments Align?

If you were to exemplify the four root-alignments with a form of government, which would they be? Bonus points for whys. To allay the problem of definitions, here is how I'm (re)defining alignment: Good: altruism, empathy, compassion Evil: pragmatism, self-interest at any cost Freedom: the...

    E-Powers Interchangeable with Classic Powers?

I seem to remember people saying that E-powers are interchangeable with classic powers; like an E-druid can take a classic at-will attack, and vice versa. But I can't find anything to that effect in HotFK, so I'm hoping the community can either confirm or deny this memory. Thanks!

    D&D 4E [4e Clone] Scaling Powers! (?)

Same here; in fact I went ahead and wrote enhancement bonuses right out of the game. :D The magic-item sweet spot I'm aiming for is 'A game without them is like Hard mode; a game that follows my guidelines is like Normal mode; and a Monty Haul game is like Beginner's mode.'

    D&D 4E [4e Clone] Scaling Powers! (?)

While I very much want to keep everyone on the same power schedule by default, there will be feats and/or variants for players who like to have many options. They won't have any more 'power slots' than other PCs, of course, but a character could collect powers the way pre-4e wizards collect...

    D&D 4E [4e Clone] Scaling Powers! (?)

You're right, this is a concern. There are a few factors that will hopefully render it a non-issue in play -- reduced monster hit points, as I mentioned, as well as 'page 42' guidelines that equate stunting with encounter powers rather than at-wills, and finally a different magic item strategy...

    D&D 4E [4e Clone] Scaling Powers! (?)

Going to bump this thread, 'cause I don't think I mentioned Dungeoneer and @Tony Vargas correctly the first time. EDIT: Wow, either my computer or this site hate me trying to mention people. I've no idea how 'Dungeoneer' gets turned into 'Morrus.'

    D&D 4E [4e Clone] Scaling Powers! (?)

In the 'Will there be a 4.75e?' thread, @Dungeoneer and @Tony Vargas inspired me to revisit the idea of scaling encounter and daily powers so that the game doesn't need so darn many of them. (Some of which are simply scaled-up versions of lower-level powers to begin with.) Though I didn't...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Not my favorite part of game design either. :p It's why I'll create a bare-bones selection of powers, and then point players and DMs toward the power-creation guidelines I've written! Anyhow, you're right that the scaling works for my extreme daily vs. daily example, but when I get into scaling...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Turns out I mistyped due to not checking the character advancement table, so let's lay out 4e's encounter power schedule: 1st Level: first encounter power 3rd Level: second encounter power 7th Level: third encounter power 11th Level: fourth (PP) encounter power 13th Level: 1st level power gets...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

So your solution would be to give PCs, say, one new encounter and daily power per tier instead of two? It does create power disparity issues*, but it is an intriguing idea. *I wouldn't want to scale all powers up at 13th, 23rd, etc., because for example a scaled-up Dominate power is much much...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Oh sure, these were my initial thoughts as well. To demonstrate the problem I ran into, let's talk about all-damage encounter powers: Let's say that a 1st level all-damage encounter power deals 2dX + mod, and scales up by one die at 13th and 23rd level. Everything works just peachy at 13th...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Oh man, wish I could read that article! I did originally toy with this idea, but quickly ran into a problem: Scaling all powers either creates dead levels, or a kind of power creep at each consecutive new power level. I.e., scaling all powers would require a major rejiggering of character...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Essentially agreed on all counts. My own goal in cloning 4e is to streamline, simplify, and/or polish the areas where it isn't all it can be. For example, I haven't fundamentally changed anything about monsters. They still exist in self-contained stat blocks with levels, roles, powers, and...

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Here is the link to my ENworld Complete 4th thread, and I'll be happy to send anyone links to the actual google doc pdfs via PM. :)

Will there be a 4.75 a la Pathfinder?

Indeed, and that's the rub! Everyone seems to have a slightly different idea of what a 4e clone should be. I've been told that my clone-in-progess 'doesn't feel like 4e,' even though from my view it's a logical extension of 4e. On the other hand, every time I pose a design question to the 4e...
