Whenever the party was in a safe place. Could be we made it back to town, or a camp in the wilderness, but never in the middle of a dungeon.

Unfortunately inactive right now. We had been playing on a VTT, but when everyone is a adult with children, it's hard to meet. We've been talking about instead of doing a campaign style game, running one (or two) shots. It would give more people a chance to DM and let us explore lots of systems.

Letting the have access to 5E style cantrips helps out here as well.

What if they were tied to different parts of character creation? For example your combat pillar abilities come from your class, social pillar from your background and exploration from something...I don't think species would work for this.

I like the feat approach as well, but if subclasses are chosen at lvl1, what if when you multi-class you only get the base features of the class and never (or maybe delayed) access to subclasses?
