    DrSpunj's Class Balance Spreadsheet

I admit I don't know squat about commoners. Didn't know they were a real (NPC?) class, rarely use anything like them, and in any case never go to the trouble of rolling them up/buying them in detail. If you do, and commoners get d6 HP (not d4?), and get 4 SPs/lvl (not 2 SPs?), then for...

    DrSpunj's Class Balance Spreadsheet

What I mean when I say someone can commit to a thought-out theme for several levels (and commit to buy themed feats a few levels ahead), I meant to say they're presently *commiting* to buying certain feats later, not that they're presently *paying* for later feats. If, upon reaching a level they...

    DrSpunj's Class Balance Spreadsheet

DrSpunj, Good catch. I meant d6, d8, d10, d12 cost 0, 1, 2, 3. So powerful or combat feats cost 5, and general or expansion feats cost 3. Since I think pre-mapped abilities, and low-power prereq'd feats should cost less, feats which fall into one or especially both categories (like the...

    DrSpunj's Class Balance Spreadsheet

    Well, at this point, I think I'll be going with a very conservative (low-cost) point system. - d6, d8, d10, d12 cost 1, 2, 3, 4 - BAB costs 0, 1, 2 - Adding +1 to a save always costs 1 - 4, 6, 8, 10 SPs cost 0, 1, 2, 3 - Weapon and Armor Profs cost 0, 1, 2, 3 - Feats/Specials cost 3 (general)...

    DrSpunj's Class Balance Spreadsheet

Well, I've had a chance to look it over more completely. It's a great tool, especially with the d12 and other extensions (thanks again!), though I'm sure I'll completely revamp the costs. The skills cost, I like. As others have noted, it seems a good baseline for each SP beyond 4/lvl costing 1...

    DrSpunj's Class Balance Spreadsheet

Six of one, half dozen of the other. Right. I originally read them as Poor = 0 at 1st level, +0.33 per subsequent Level Average = 1 at 1st, +0.4 per subsequent Level Good = 2 at 1st, +0.5 per subsequent Level ...which, rounding up for .5 and above, works out exactly the same.

    DrSpunj's Class Balance Spreadsheet

The more things change... Nice work, DrSpunj. This chart is definitely meant to be used as a step-off point to either make new and balanced classes, or to make point-based classless characters, level-by-level. And a lot looks similar to the much earlier work you did on classless character...

    Caw! *Swoop* Gotcher wand!

If the raven is a familiar, you could cast "True Strike" on it, as familiars can accept spells meant for "you". At that point, it rushes forward, tries to "Disarm" a one-handed small item with its claws (which are probably fine) at -8 size difference. Few wizards threaten their area when they...

Protection from X spells vs. Mind Control

I like Plane Sailing's explanation. It helps me understand how Hold Person can be seen as different, since Otto's Irresistable Dance didn't originally strike me as excercising mental control. Well, of course it does, but I can at least see why the PHB writer who wrote that weird passage saw Hold...

Protection from X spells vs. Mind Control

Thanks for the effort. This might make sense if I could get in the right mind-set, but I can't seem to grok it. How can any mind affecting compulsion make you hold still without excercising mental control? Hold Person doesn't physiologically change you, it's just a single command (or...

Protection from X spells vs. Mind Control

Kraedin, Yes. That's it in a nut-shell. Thanks for clarifying my question. Any ideas as to an answer?

Protection from X spells vs. Mind Control

Yes, two dominations on the same target roll vs. each other to see which is obeyed. I probably wasn't clear in my inquiry. How is a Hold Person spell different from a Domination spell? They're both officially "mind-affecting, compulsions, enchantments", but the PHB implies that Hold Person...

Protection from X spells vs. Mind Control

In the PHB, under the "conflicting spell effects" magic description area, there seems to be a conflict I can't figure out. It says to make opposed Charisma rolls when the effects of two mind-affecting spells directly conflict with one another. But is also says that this is moot wrt, say, Hold...

    Can Mirror Images Flank?

IceBear, This rules forum is often for arguing how the literal written word should be interpreted. Beyond the name-calling and B.S., there's actually a demand for that kind of feedback. But in that vein, if I state Mirror Images might be used to flank, then from that point on I'm on my own...

    Can Mirror Images Flank?

IceBear, Sorry my posts weren't more clear to you. But really it's just another everyday case of the GM having to fill in gaps in the rules, since the rules are well-intentioned, but don't spell out every option when dealing with imaginative players. They can't sanely be expected to do so. The...

    Can Mirror Images Flank?

IceBear, I also think we share nearly the same view. And I can't truthfully say that if I played with rules-mongering munchkin min-maxers, I wouldn't completely disallow the tactic, soon before finding another group with which to play. In that scenerio (most scenerios), arguing with players...

    Can Mirror Images Flank?

It depends on the players, too. There are a lot of players who play with their eyes on a destination they'll never reach, and others who play for the journey. I don't mind balanced on-the-spot rules. So long as they don't change rules germane to my character's creation or development, I don't...

    Can Mirror Images Flank?

Icebear, You may have a different style of GMing than me. I like creative uses of spells, and appreciate players taking risks. I don't allow any half-baked idea to become a free add-on feature for all situations -- I make judgment calls with every unusual use attempt. If a player attempts...

    Can Mirror Images Flank?

KaeYoss wrote: I agree that the books are subject to GM interpretations such as the two little questions you ask. And I wouldn't argue with you were I in your game once you made that call. Personally, I like your second little question, but would state the first little question a bit...
