I would suggest the Kingdoms of Kalamar Adventures, especially the story line in the Coin series (Root of Evil, Forging Darkness, and Coin's End)they are great modules, have lots of story and combat and are easy to use. They are also fairly easy to port into any setting.

One thing that I tried once was to allow the characters to roll dice, but they never actually saw their character sheets, and never distributed skill points or chose feats (these were chosen based on what the PCs did, or had the chance to learn).
