    Feat pickin' time!

As per current rules you can choose the Eldritch strike at-will power instead of the Eldritch blast at-will power. If your a multiclassed warlock you likely have Eldritch blast and Dire radiance. So swap Eldritch blast for Eldritch strike. Eldritch strike is a melee weapon power and also a...

Failures of a new DM, and how to correct it?

For me 9-10 players would be too many. Makes the job as a DM more stressfull and less focused. I would consider splitting the players into 2 groups and play with each group biweekly. That could also give you the option af a fresh start. New campaign and new characters for all. This time...

Has anyone updated the monsters in P2 to MM3 standards yet?

I just did that a couple a weeks ago and don't mind sharing. I did make sweeping changes to the adventure though and as a result it might only be the Drow that you can use. Drop me an e-mail and I'll send them to you.

1st level party vs. injured giant

You could rule that the giants wounds as a favorable circumstance for the players granting +2 to hit, and a negative circumstance for the giant inflicting a -2 penalty to attacks. That will help make a higher level foe more managable.

    Designing the Perfect D&D

But it should be noted that the actual ability scores have very little impact on the combat math in Jesters system. In fact if you take two fighters and one has Str 14 and the other Str 18 at level 1 there will never be any difference in their attack and damage bonus. In fact the only thing the...

    Designing the Perfect D&D

Interesting work. A couple of questions popped up as I went through the posts. Who has proficiency in helmets? How do you get a critical hit and what happens on a critical hit? If two classes has the same fighting style/stance/metamagic, do levels in these classes stack in regards to...

    Adventure Critique please

I understand your worries; a TPK on the first adventure would be bad indeed. Never be afraid to adjust on the fly. So run him without the "extra" attack. If it turns out the players are wiping the floor with him let him do something extra and cool. The most important thing to remember is that...

    Adventure Critique please

I'm glad to see you have taken the advice in the other thread in such a positive way and I think you are doing very well in planning out the adventure. I'll leave it to Arlough to comment more ind depth as he is doing a sweet job of doing that. So I'll just touch upon the Bandit leader...

    Monster Creation

A bit of advice on the adventure structure. Beware of railroading, which just means that you should leave room for the adventure not following the structure you outlined. 1. Do you have a reserve plan if the players manage to stop the bandits from stealing the statue? Because they just might...

    Monster Creation

Most of it looks fine. The few points that stick out are: 1. Brutes are supposed to do an extra 25% damage. It doesn't seem yours do. 2. Brutes should have lower AC (lvl+12). 3. It is usually soldiers that mark their targets, not brutes. 4. Encounter powers should do 50-75% extra damage...

    Monster Creation

Damn! Can I redeem myself by revealing that I do use d12's fairly often for brutes. I just like the idea of brutes swinging for the fences, sometimes just gracing their target and at other times send them flying. And rolling 2 or 3d12 for damage seems to focus my players attention nicely.

    Monster Creation

Monster attacks vs. a single target should do about monster lvl+8 damage. Monster attacks vs. multiple targets should do about monster lvl+3 damage. Other than verisimilitude theres absolutely no reason monsters should use weapon based damage expressions. Personally I dislike d4's (annoying...

    Destroying a Stone Bridge

If this is your goal there is no need to invent a ritual. The real decision is whether you want the players to have a chance of interrupting the villain or not. If not then: As the players come within sight of the bridge the villain collapses the bridge with one last display of magic, laughs...

    Destroying a Stone Bridge

30 minutes is enough to do ritual magic. To me that means it should be enough time to destroy a small stone bridge. But it's not a situation that is covered by the rules. In the end it depends on DM fiat. If I where the DM I would simply decide on a result depending on what would seem...

Defenses and To Hits for Your Party ~ Averages

Here are the statistical arguments. At level 13 a “normal” dwarf fighter would be at +19 vs. AC. I arrive at this number like this: +6 lvl, +3 enhancement, +2 proficiency, +1 fighter weapon talent, +5 ability (str 21), +2 feat (weapon expertise) Your dwarf friend has +1 from ability (str 13)...

Defenses and To Hits for Your Party ~ Averages

Just to be clear. Feat selection is what makes the difference between a standard and an optimized character. But not a weak character and an optimized character. Any character who starts with an 16-18 in his prime stat and increases it at every possible opportunity will be OK no matter what...

Defenses and To Hits for Your Party ~ Averages

If I were the DM for this group I would find the average numbers for AC, Defenses, and Attacks and simply treat the group as being of the level that those numbers show. So if I found that the characters on average were at -3 compared to the expected numbers for their level. I would design...

    Maybe I'm playing it wrong...

Yeah. In that case damage should be around 1d12+9 (15,5 average) = the same as Brash Strike. Or even as high as 1d12+12. (+4 str, +3 dex, +4 stance, +1 weapon focus).

    Maybe I'm playing it wrong...

There's a lot more to take into account here. The fighter stats seem to measure up just fine. But with the at-will there should be some kind of rider effect. Like doing Str damage to another enemy with Cleave (auto-killing a minion is always nice), sliding/pushing the enemy with Tide of...

New Monsters damage et al driving me insane.

I've thrown a lot of Gnolls at my PC's (Thunderspire) and Pack Attack can be a bit much. My reasoning would be; 1: I expect the Pack Attack bonus to factor in on ...say 50 % of the Gnolls attacks. That presumes that the players know about the bonus and do their best to avoid being ganged up...
