D&D 5E What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

Honestly? No, it's not. Back when I learned D&D, we played in Greyhawk, but the lack of this sort of information meant that it was much less work-intensive to leave the characters unconnected to any of the power groups in the setting.

D&D 5E What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

There's a ton of outdated information in the 83 boxed set: mostly having to do with the make-up of humanoid patrols, groups and armies, but also including details of the gods and whoch spells they can use (while having very little on what it means to be a cleric or a follower of those gods)...

D&D 5E What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

Greyhawk's selling point as a setting with more moral ambiguity is actually a very good selling point. It's a setting whose Gandalf/Elminster analogue is as likely to work against the forces of Good as with them. As for micro vs. macro, that can be turned into a feature-not-a-bug if you focus...

D&D 5E What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

The Greyhawk Wars had nothing to do with an edition change. By the time 2e came out, Greyhawk was releasing the Greyhawk Adventures hardcover, which was merely an expansion of the 83 boxed set. After that, the City of Greyhawk came out, with still no wars in sight. The Greyhawk Wars was an...

    D&D 5E L&L for November 24th

Yes, but "things that only affected one or the other" was a desired goal.

    D&D 5E L&L for November 24th

You answered your question right there: some things affect checks (active use of ability scores) and some affect saves (passive/reactive use of ability scores).

Mari Kolkowsky (D&D Art Director) got laid off yesterday

Hi, there! ;) One of the things people forget: when an Art Director shows the projects they Art Directed, the very illustrations are proof of their work, because *that* artist only did *that* picture because the AD chose to make that match. Finding the right artist for the job is one of the...

D&D 5E What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

I'd love to see this. The Flanaess is already somewhat divided into regions, like Old Keoland in the East, or the Great Kingdom in the West, each with different flavors (millenia-old realm beleaguered by giant invasions vs. decadent civilization corrupted by demon worship). Eberron did do...

D&D 5E What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

For one, large swathes of Greyhawk lie unexplored/undetailed. And two, a huge part of the material that was published focused on the *setting*, but not on how it interfaces with the player characters. A lot of it is "macro" level, very little is "micro" level. As an example: last year I wrote...

Mari was a delight to work with, and I'm sad to see her go. :(

Wow. That's... I can't even fathom why you would post something like that.

D&D 5E D&D Next Q&A: Warlock Pacts, Patrons, and Iniate Feats

I suspect the warlock will use spells, but in a spellcasting manner different from other classes (perhaps casting a very small number of spells at will?).

D&D 5E Wandering Monsters 6/11/13: Riddle of the Sphinx

I wonder if, instead of being placed by a god, sphinxes just spontaneously appeared where Hidden Things were placed. They'd be almost like Riddles Made Flesh, the physical embodiment of the world's barriers and obstacles: they exist to test the mettle of all beings, culling the "unworthy" and...

D&D 5E Wandering Monsters 6/11/13: Riddle of the Sphinx

I'd actually do it the other way around: keep the basic sphinxes as the immortal guardians showcased here, and offer the species relationships as an optional layer. It's easier to add than to subtract.

D&D 5E Wandering Monsters 6/11/13: Riddle of the Sphinx

James, with the help of Matt Sernett, takes another look at sphinxes! http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4wand/20131106 I like the different tests for different types of sphinxes, and how combat is not a valid option for bypassing a test.

Art PACT: Paying freelancers in exposure

With the internet readily available, "exposure" is no longer a valid excuse for not paying anyone. Any artist can get "exposure" by putting together an online gallery and posting links on Facebook, Twitter and G+. Writers can come up with short stories, designers can put together small PDFs...

How many arrows can an expert archer fire in a round?

Of course, the real advantage of crossbows, compared to bows, is the penetration (+5 to hit against opponents in heavy armor) and ease of use. The video mentioned the archer took 3 years to get to this point. A crossbow is point-and-shoot (and hand over to a shieldbearer to reload, while you...

D&D 5E I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Two fighters make greatsword attacks against an opponent. One is specialized in two-handed weapons, the other is not. Both attacks fail to penetrate the target's armor (i.e., they miss). Fir the non-specialist, that's it. But the specialist shifts his handing on the weapon just enough for the...

D&D 5E Wandering Monsters 10/30/2013: Trick or Treat?

This may be just my perception, steeldragons, but that came off as awfully aggressive.
