    Healing Potions seem odd

I've played in a 3.x campaign where hit points were always considered actual, physical wounds. (That's only happened to me once, and I can totally see how picturing it that way makes Second Wind seem 'unrealistic'. Any other game I've been in it's been assumed that at least some of the HPs lost...

Forked Thread: My first 4E game...

Oof. A fork that *starts* with line-by-line rebuttals. My head hurts. Anyway,to respond to the only part of this thread I can understand, seems pretty easy to add "0th level" to the game if that's something you really want. Just give people their feats and powers as they progress?

Using WoW's art assets to visualize your character

Very cool idea. This is one of the only MMO character building options I can think of that you can use without having to subscribe to the game, so it's pretty darn handy. And yes, folks who've never played WOW at all may very well get more use out of this than people who have, since they won't...

    Spears not having a range?

I don't think I'd be comfortable judging any system by those criteria, because with a jerk DM I can't picture even showing up. :) Seems perfectly reasonable. If you don't like the javelin rules being used for "spears balanced for throwing", that'd way of handling it would work fine.

Forked Thread: Rate WotC as a company: 4e Complete?

Rudeness and crap like "Aha, we see that being irrational is the hallmark of the 4e fanboy" aside... the thread seems to boil down to "I define 'complete' as being a playable game without further purchases" vs. "I define 'complete' as having not left out X,Y,and Z which I think should have...

4e--can you write a novel using it?

The idea behind this thread really amuses me, because if I look at almost any heroic fantasy book I've read that WASN'T based on D&D rules, I think 4e could reasonably model them. I mean, two of the tropes you picked out as "I don't see how this could possibly happen in a fantasy novel" are...

I Am Liberated (and my NPCs are too)

Same. Most of the time my NPCs had stats only after they needed them the first time. But I think having it as the formal system is an improvement, because I never felt like the old CR/EL system gave very useful results.

    Explain INT and Reflex, Please

Excuse the pun, but I think some of you are overthinking it. If your Dex is higher than your Int, then Dex represents the "quick thinking" part of "Quick thinking kept me from getting hit." If your Int is higher than your Dex, then Int represents the "quick thinking" part of "Quick thinking...

Need help with a FR campaign (new DM)

I'm not sure if this is helpful, I hope it is. :) I don't think heavy rigorous backstory and new DMs mix very well -- not that you should be dissuaded from what you're working on, I'm just saying, I'd focus primarily on what sounds like it'd be a fun adventure, and figure out how the metaplot...

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

CustServ reply: You can handle it however you want. Kind of goes along with what everyone else has been saying. :) I'm pretty sure that is the answer they'd give for anything that happens "in game" when there are no PCs around. Implied response: If you think it'd be dumb for a lvl 20 minion...

Sunless Citidel vs. Keep on the Shadowfell

Doesn't really sound like anything in particular in WOW to me (except for effects/bonuses a mob gets when bloodied, I guess that's sort of like "boss phases"). But I get what you're saying, it put the same bad taste in your mouth that something like that would.

    Rescue at Rivenroar Posted

I will confess that my negative opinion is in part colored by the fact that it took like 20 minutes to get the %#@% thing to load. I never understood what people were complaining about with the D&D Insider login until that happened. I'll hold up until some of the Dragon supplementary material...

My players having more fun than me

If you do decide to keep DMing, I'd consider focusing on something that gets you jazzed about your setting, or a particular premise, something not very game mechanic-ish, and see if you can leverage that to get excited again. I've found sometimes that was something I needed; at least once or...

Help! A player wants to play "Captain America"

Agreed. It's a bummer to see people being down on the idea, but that's more than made up for by the enthusiasm folks have put into making the concept work. Plus, it's just fun to see different ways of creating it.

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

The reason that they have specifically 1 hp as opposed to say 1d4 or something is that it keeps the bookkeeping much simpler. A minion is either hit and taken out, or still in play. No paper trail. If you think it would make sense for a minion to sometimes survive a hit but not usually, the...

    Rescue at Rivenroar Posted

This whole thing feels like someone went "Well we should have an Adventure Path thingie, the old Dungeon did those", and then promptly had someone who'd never read one of the Paizo ones write it. (Honestly, I more expect that these are individual adventures they'll loosely tie together. I'd be...

    Forked Thread: KotShadowfell wierdness/plotholes.

These explanations work for me! Alternatively, Bahamut's cursed these folk to an eternity of undeath. You can do that, because hey, if your worshippers get out of line, you're always allowed to whip out the locusts & plagues on them (or make them into undead). Even Lawful Good gods may very...

What happens when a minion crits?

I just assumed that if the minion does 4 damage or whatever, it doesn't matter if one has a mace the other an axe, they do 4 damage. There's no crits, there's no figuring out modifiers, they're minions and their raison d'etre is that they're easy to run. It's an abstraction. If you have minions...

    XP for a dream battle - yes/no?

Speaking purely practically... If you don't give XP for it, prepare for your players to taunt you before every fight in the future with "Hey, is this a dream? How about this?" ;) (Whether or not it was a shared dream, if it got played out at the table, I'd award XP for it.)

    Players Vs. DMs

I dunno man, all we have for evidence as to whether your players are having a good time is... you telling us that one of the players isn't having a good time with one particular plot element. So that's what people are gonna talk about. Plus a lot us have experienced the "Aha! you are...
