D&D 5E The math of D&D Next; a moderating proposal

I disagree with this concept. I believe 50% is right on for comparable opponents. And each hit should be a very unwanted event that should be avoided. The concept of taking just another hit seems ludicrous. Every hit should matter significantly and therefore combat is not about taking...

D&D 5E The math of D&D Next; a moderating proposal

This is what I have been considering. Combat shouldnt be about how many hits i can take, but how many I can avoid. Any hit should be unwanted and have side effects....that why people use cover..except for the british red coats that is... :)

How long should a round represent?

...all if these actions in one round from one person is what I would like to see go away. All of these activities extend and prolong combat. If we nix the action bloat in a round we wouldn't need long combat rounds. Minor, move, standard, action point should reduce to just one action plus move.

How long should a round represent?

I believe a round should just be long enough to to make a quick attack and a short move. My vote is for 3 second rounds... In 3 seconds an average human could supposedly walk one yard/meter and attack, or run up to 12 yards/meters and attack with a penalty, or sprint up to about 18 yards/meters...

Temple of Elemental Evil placed in the Forgotten Realms

I'm curious about running a campaign using the ToEE in the Forgotten Realms as my title states. I would like to how others went about doing this. If anyone has DMed or played in such a game, could you post about how well it worked and what changes were made. The edition doesnt mater to me...

    Whats your D&Dism?

My D&Dism is a combination of several things… Using a D20, playing a fantasy based RPG with some good friends having a blast, and encountering honest to goodness classic D&D style monsters (beholders, mind flayers, drow, etc.) … and that’s about it. The rest of the rules are not sacred to me at...

Why do we really need HP to represent things other than physical injuries?

Anything worth doing is worth doing well and great things usually come from hard work. It may be a bit tricky at first to divise a physical damage only system, but the results would be awesome! IMHO. Physical, fatigue, and mental damage should all be tracked separately and resulting trauma...

Combat tweaks I would like to see.

I agree with the notion of sacred cows not needing to be sacred. As a matter of fact, they can be tasty when bbqed. I have had similar thoughts with the OP considering the same subjects although I decided on different mechanics to achieve what I was looking for. HPs I replaced the concept of...

    Swords. More swords.

Jester, regarding the comment you made concerning Gladii and Shortswords. . . Actually there is an incredible difference, starting with metallurgy -the gladius was carbon steel which was pliant, incredibly sharp, light weight and prone to dulling and rusting quickly. Bladed only on one side...

What do the D&D classes mean to you?

Classes have always felt like a straight jacket. They provide you with an archtypical adventuring profession which for beginners is nice and feels comfortable. But when a player starts to get a feel for the game, some want to try out some more defined and different types of adventuring...

D&D 5E D&D Next: How Miniatures Should Fit?

I agree that the game should be the priority and writen for use with and without minis. I am though a visual DM and I love the hell out of the minis. The pre-painted plastic minis are the greatest thing since the wheel...IMHO. Once this was let loose there is no going back. I’ve been...

No argument here...every die roll increases time spent in combat...

    Retraining?

OK, fair question. In the past that has happend and the players have had that exact issue. In those cases I hand waived the change as long as the change didnt have any side effects or major differences to the story. I'm not a D#*k DM, I'm stern and try to be fair and think about my players...

    Retraining?

Making characters does not need to be some all intensive activity and the end character does not to be great at everything. Maybe people get hung up on having the perfect character, I don't know. Enjoyment at the table shouldn’t be tied to having to retrain your character. So much fun can be had...

    Retraining?

Yes, thats exactly what I ment. Its like conversing with kids, c'mon, really? If you dont like my opinion, thats fine, but this is childish. I stand by my statement. I feel retraining is goofy and stupid and I would not like to see it again, thats my opinion.

    Retraining?

Absolutely not. Retraining does not make any since. I can’t evade my logic to accept retraining no matter how hard I try. How do you explain retraining? I mean how do you explain if one day I decided that the skills I learned driving a car were no longer needed and that I can just trade my...

How many roles should there be?

I gave 4E a try right out of the gate up to the summer of 2011. The roles that labeled the classes did in fact focus people to think of mostly combat. Of all the years I introduced new people to this hobby 4E was the most difficult. I would say IME the roles and combat always brought to the...

How many roles should there be?

There should be no roles what so ever. Classes provide enough distinction on their own. Then characters add their background and character concept. The entire use of roles in 4E was for combat anyways...which added to the concept of 4th being only about combat. Let players role play their...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

I would like to think that since I have been an impartial DM that they do in fact exist. :) As DM, I have no desire to be partial and I would gain nothing by doing it. My game is a sandbox, my players are informed of potential lethality, and for situations that i have yet to plan or did plan...

    Measurements for ranges and grids

I would be interesterd in seeing all measurements to be counted by yards/meters. By this I mean all weapon ranges, spell ranges, and such. I belive that using the yard/meter would be friendly for both us backwards americans and the rest of the metric world. I recognize there is a difference...
