    New DM Tabletop Question

Congratulations on making the DM leap! We definitely need more DM's out there. As for what to buy, well a lot really depends in my opinion. Will you be able to afford say, $25 or so every three months? Or an up front cost of $75 for an entire year? If so, I would say start with a DDi...

Looking to turn runepriest into "controller"

If you're a dwarf, you can take the Knock Back feat which lets you knock prone a creature when you save vs. falling prone. Other than that, not a whole lot jumps out at me, rune priests, despite what the books say, do not do a whole lot of control in my opinion.

Edit: Scooped with a better answer.

I think i have universal controller feature

I like the direction you are taking with the OP's idea here. The idea being to give all controller classes a class feature that in some way enhances their schtick. Making it save based in some way (i.e. either a penalty to saves, once per round/encounter require a successful save to be...

    Advice Requested: Healer Build

You'll have to look at the wording of the items to determine what stacks. As a general rule, bonuses will stack so long as they are not of the same "type". So if you have two bonuses that say "power bonus" they would not stack with each other, but a "power bonus" would stack with an "item...

    DM experience with dragons

One thing I might add to this is make the dragon a recurring villain. Perhaps the first time they see the dragon, the fight is an a relatively open area and well out of sight of its lair (i.e. the PCs have no idea where it lairs). But remember that dragons are highly intelligent, so when the...

    Epic Final Battle

Sounds like an awesome time. Its particularly good to know that an Epic level party can be appropriately challenged with enough forethought. Would XP you for the excellent details but alas, must spread some love around first.

    DM experience with dragons

From the poaching side of it, as was said earlier, if you create the market, then yeah the PCs will exploit it. For me, I tend to let them harvest a little bit of beast that they slay if they want to use the hide for armor or some such, but if they are merely trying to bilk every last cp out of...

    Pandemonium!

Can't help you with the maptools aspect, but I love the idea. I will be doing something similar in the early stages of the Epic Tier in my campaign when the party ends up on the Dream Plane. Cool thing about dreams being that the dreamer can easily alter them should they want to. :) As for...

    Runepriests of Kara-Tur is up!

Aye, as I said, was a very minor complaint and one directed more at WotC for the initial design than anything. Just kind of funny when the untrained Wizard is almost as knowledgeable as the trained RP. As I said though, the article as a whole is fantastic. Of course, my RP just so happens...

    Runepriests of Kara-Tur is up!

Personally, I really liked the article. I thought it a bit odd that the level 3 encounter power targeted all creatures, and not just enemies, but that really isn't a big deal. I don't mind forcing my rune priest to be a little more careful with his powers. The PP is also quite nice in my...

Rules, Rules, Rules (Legends & Lore)

I thought this was one of the better L&L articles to date. I do agree with the notion that the more detailed the rules are, the less wiggle room the DM has for making judgment calls. Its not so much that the designers are saying "Hey DM's, you can't change our rules!" Rather its the growing...

What I want to Monster Builder to do

Are you looking for a full suite of class based powers (i.e. as if the monster were a PC)? Or just how to make say an Ogre Shaman? If the former, a lot of the monsters can be used as the race choice in CB. If the latter, I believe the DMG has rules for applying a class template to a monster...

    Phantom Chasm

More of an applied logic thing. The RAW don't really address 3D all that well, but a burst extends X squares in either direction from the origin square. So. if you center it on the "ground" square, then it would go one square up (i.e. 10 feet high at its peak) and in theory one square down if...

    Are encounters too easy?

I haven't had trouble challenging (or even killing for that matter) PCs in the games I've run. As Dice4Hire says, tactics and luck have a lot to do with it. One instance also was the result of an admittedly poorly designed encounter which was made worse when that encounter was triggered during...

Newer DM needs help with budding power gamer

Hard to say what's going on without knowing more about your group. What are the classes/races/levels? What is it exactly that your group is doing that is causing them to slice through encounters? There are any number of possible explanations running anywhere from extreme good luck to simply...

    Phantom Chasm

The only other thing I would add to the second question is that I would consider the burst 1 to be three dimensional (including 1 square up -- so ten feet high in total). This means that a flying creature could fly above the zone, so long as it is not flying through the zone.

    Challenging an Epic Party

Putting Vecna first in the initiative order certainly helps. However, one of the best features I've found for solos is the ability to get a multitude of actions. The biggest vulnerability any solo has is its relative lack of actions. Therefore, I'd take a look at your party's potential...

How do you build your characters?

For me, I usually start with a very general concept, often little more than class and/or race. From there I try to puzzle out what exactly makes the character tick (does he prefer ranged combat? is he a skill monkey? does he hate orcs?, etc.). After that, I just tend to sort of pick options as...
