Please take the whole "Hit Points and Regaining Hit points" back to the drawing board

I keep post-it notes in my old AD&D books on certain pages just for times like these... And I'll forego the annoying BIG FONT in lieu of bolding for emphasis. 50/50? Not according to Gary, who thought that hit points equating solely (or even significantly) to physical damage was silly...

    Wizards: Already Too Strong?

Were the rats in the Burning Hands' area of effect? Because if they were, they should have died since the bare minimum (with a successful save and the lowest possible damage roll) that the spell can do is 2 damage, which is more than their 1 hit point. If they were in range and the DM had them...

    The Playtest Fighter

That's a rather disingenuous comparison. That 2-page 1st-level wizard also has another 3-4 pages of spells you need to play the class, but aren't included in the character sheet. I could make the Essentials Fighter sheet even smaller if I went the same route and removed all of the actual details...

    The Playtest Fighter

The Fighter doesn't get extra actions every round either. At 2nd level, he gets 2 extra actions per day. The Cleric can cast Spiritual Weapon and get the equivalent of 10 extra actions (a free extra attack every round for 1 minute/10 rounds). And that's just from a single casting. At 1st level.

    First Impressions?

Sort of. The Guardian theme is a crappy Defender, and the Slayer is a laughable attempt at the Striker (considering it's basically a feature built into a Defender power in 4e).
  6. The Little Raven

    First Impressions?

I wonder who thought that allowing spells to have nearly-unrestricted bonus stacking was a good idea after two editions where type-restricted bonus stacking caused problems.

    Presentation! Saga Style

No. Not just no, but HELL NO. Angels and Demons getting together for a drink in a bar and debating alignment philosophy is NOT the default for D&D. Getting that angel to help you kick in that demon's face is. No offense to anyone that likes/loves Planescape, but it's heavy-handed philosophical...

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

So, you're saying that a non-magical healing class cannot work without healing 1/4 hit points and having each character have a daily limit to the amount of times they can be healed in such a way? So, it would be completely and utterly impossible to create a non-magical healing class in 3e that...

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

Going on 4 years and and people's complaints about healing surges show they still don't understand what healing surges are. Healing surges are NOT self-healing or non-magical healing. They are a pacing and scaling healing mechanic. They give you a scaling value to determine how much you heal...

Pathfinder 1E Why Paizo fans are better than WotC fans.

Heh. I know a girl who is in that and she lives with her grandmother.

    D&D 5E Structuring 5E: Bring back Basic & Advanced?

I think rating optional modules as either Basic or Advanced is a good nod to the historical split, but without splitting the game into two versions commercially. Basic modules could be characterized by simplicity of use, lighter mechanics, and a higher likelihood to simply build off mechanics in...

D&D 5E D&D Next Blog: Tone and Edition

There should a big section in the introduction to the PHB about how not all options (rules/races/classes/feats/items/skills/whatever) will be available to them depending on the tone of the DM's games. Then talk about a few examples... a DM wants a humans-only game for a more authentic S&S...

Pathfinder 1E Why Paizo fans are better than WotC fans.

Also, WotC is a wholly owned subsidiary of a publicly traded company. They have a lot of legal landmines to deal with when it comes to sharing information that Paizo doesn't have to deal with.

D&D 5E Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

Wow. This bodes very well for this upcoming edition.

Cleric design goals . Legends and Lore April 23

While modern day people talk about subtle miracles, Moses and Biblical miracles are definitely nowhere near a model for that philosophy. We're talking about a guy that got marching orders from a talking, burning bush. Who parted the Red Sea. Who called down plagues of locusts, flies, diseases...

    D&D 5E [Ro3 4/24/2012] The Action Economy of D&D Next

Also can be incredibly boring, particularly when you have to sacrifice that action for something small, like opening a door, or drinking a potion, or retrieving an item from your pouch. Or, let's say you don't move, and that move action is now useless since its only use is movement (rather than...

Blog: Background and Themes a closer look.

That is how I interpret it, too. Either you pick a Background, or you get free skill selection; you pick a theme, or you get free feat selection. In addition, a DM might say "Hey, you can customize one feat after picking a theme, or drop one Background skill and pick up any one of your choice."...

After Ed Greenwood's FR: Gary Gygax's Greyhawk

While I would love to see a Greyhawk Campaign Setting that draws on the original materials, I don't think slapping Gary's name on it when he's not directly involved in it is a good idea. It just smacks of cynical opportunism to me.

    Dear WotC: Be Blizzard

This is pretty blatantly lopsided. You're comparing one edition's entire lifespan to the point in another edition when they opted to begin working on the next edition. A more accurate comparison would be that 3.X/3.5 was 5 years old when they decided it needed to be replaced with 4e, compared to...
