    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Lets pretend that D&D Next starts to grow on you, and you find yourself having a change of heart to the point you honestly think it's the d20 game for you: Would you be willing to drop the $50 on the PHB, even if it contains no DM info at all? I think that is the question that is most pertinent...

    D&D 5E Multiclassing discussion

What about this as a ham-fisted, old-school fix to all possible multiclassing abuses: If you multiclass, you may only ever have 2 classes, and niether class may never be more than 1 level behind the other. (I will now duck for cover)

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

So if the Pathfinder Core Rulebook had zero DM content in it, you would not have bought it I assume.

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Sure, "Is this book worth my money" is a totally valid discussion point. And you can create any deal-breaker you like. Goodness knows this forum exist in the first place because of the various reasons people refuse to buy D&D Next. In any case: "It needs to have DM content (like Pathfinder) or...

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Why do I suspect that those who balk at the price tag are: 1- dedicated D&D Next detractors, and, 2- had no problem shelling out $50 for the Pathfinder Core Rulebook It must have been all that awesome DM content right?

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

D&D has followed the three core rulebook model for 40 years. Nobody whined they weren't getting a 'complete game' for OD&D, AD&D, 2E, 3E or 4E. This latest fake outrage I think is just the current sneer-du-jour for anti-D&D Next people to complain about. Since you can't really whine that much...

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Well if it costs $20 to print, what do you need to sell if for to pay your people, recoup your costs, and make an acceptible ROI? I certainly don't know.

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

And not a single piece of 'awesome sauce' art by Wayne Reynolds.

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Me too. I'm sure the five-pound 500-page Pathfinder rulebook has triggered seizures in those trying to read the whole thing. I'm cool with a $50 PHB, but if this is going to be the 'rules light' version of D&D, for that price it better contain a LOT of player options (classes, subclasses...

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Ah the answer. Glad your subjective opinion constitutes universal agreement. I guess nobody's going to buy a single 5e PHB.

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Yeah I got it: $50, 300 page book with Player Info only - an outrage $50, 300 page book with Player Info, a chapter for noob DMs and a little bestiary - groovy

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Content has nothing to do with it. A book of that size and specification costs that much in 2014. Thats the economic reality.

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

I'm not a printer, but I work with printers, and I can tell you that $20 does not get you much in 2014. Whatever it is, it will be softcover or booklet style, and not contain a lot of art or flair.

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

And how much should large-format, full color gloss, 300+ page hardcover books full of commissioned art go for in your world? Also, I forgot that only WotC 'price gouges', the $50 rulebooks of Pathfinder and 13th Age get a free pass.

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

Except D&D has never done this. Including Magic Items in the 4e PHB was a mistake IMO. They want to sell books, and past history suggests that customers buy the 3 core rulebooks of a new edition by the truckload. If the 5e PHB does not include 'everything you need to play' it may grind your...

D&D 5E Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

So including chapter for DMs on running a game justifies the $50 price tag then? I prefer a separate PHB-DMG-MM. Don't get me wrong, for $50 I expect it to be good, both in content and quality, but $50 seems about right for a big core rulebook in 2014. Sorry it to burst anyone's bubble, but...

    D&D 5E What belongs in a $50 PHB?

The economic reality of 2014 is that a big, high quality, 300+ page book full of art is going to be around $50 - regardless of what gaming company publishes it. The days of $30 PHBs are over - unless you want to start cutting costs and reduce the size, amount of art, go to softcover, etc...

D&D 5E Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

Pathfinder releases a $50 Core Rulebook - groovy, so worth it. D&D releases a $50 Core Rulebook - incessant whining, foot stamping and hysterics. Right.

D&D 5E Casting spells in armour: Do you think the final game will change this?

I dont mind it for a 'gish' doing a self-buff like mirror image. However a Mage10/Fighter2 using it to cast a level 5 and a level 4 spell in round 1? Dirty.

D&D 5E Casting spells in armour: Do you think the final game will change this?

I'm all for character options - but a wizard dipping Fighter1 to increase his AC by 6 points seems frontloaded and sleazy. Arcane spellcasting in heavy armor - impossible Arcane spellcasting in light armor - sure Arcane spellcasting in medium armor or holding a shield - murky
