    D&D 5E Favored Soul: Overpowered?

Am I missing something here? We're given the Favored Soul as one of two examples to modify and create new class archetypes in this Unearthed Arcana: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/modifying-classes For sorcerer, the author states: And again: Yet the very first thing the...

D&D 5E Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

I agree that martials should be doing more damage in general. Adding +stat to cantrip damage wouldn't change that though, since martials all get extra damage sources from levels 1-2: sneak attack, smite, rage, fighting style, etc. For some reason most spellcasters get +stat damage pretty late, I...

[NPC] Sir Delandel, the Undead Paladin

I'm creating some interesting NPCs to introduce into campaigns like you used to see in Dungeon magazine and elsewhere. Each NPC comes with a short backstory, appearance, personality, monster stats, and ways to implement the NPC into your campaign. This is my first attempt: Sir Delandel, the...

Gith, Astral Ships, Limbo / Astral Plane: Resources?

I'm looking to write a short adventure. The PCs will be summoned to Limbo aiding githzerai and ride on an astral ship. They will face local hazards (slaad, not sure what else is there) and then engage in a ship to ship battle with githyanki raiders. This is a 5E game. So I have a pretty good...

D&D 5E Need help figuring out the crunch behind this zombie siege

Are you sure they'll lose badly? They have a gate that should hold a few rounds, and a wall that should hold indefinitely if the PCs stop the ogre zombie from destroying it. A bunch of commoners with crossbows will have rounds to take free shots at the horde before there's a breach and zombies...

D&D 5E Need help figuring out the crunch behind this zombie siege

I made changes based on feedback. I tried balancing the defenders / attackers a bit more and added VP for villagers defending key areas and VP for the horde entering the village and not being dealt with immediately. Village Fortifications: - A 10 ft. wide moat encircles the village. The shallow...

D&D 5E Need help figuring out the crunch behind this zombie siege

Absolutely. This Mass Combat approach is actually just an alternative, but I want to get it right. Basically in the adventure I say you can handle it two ways: Mass Combat D&D style, 13th Age style, or this custom style. I want to flesh out each option and make sure it makes sense though. The...

D&D 5E Need help figuring out the crunch behind this zombie siege

Good points. I'll remove undead fortitude, it's not needed for this. Maybe 600 is still too much. Skeletons have no resistance to piercing that I'm aware of.

D&D 5E Need help figuring out the crunch behind this zombie siege

My mini missions so far are as follows: 1) Anyone proficient in Religion can help power up the protective wards on the walls. If successful, no zombies climb over. 2) Anyone can attempt to boost morale. If successful, the NPCs fight harder. 3) New recruits (commoners) don't know how to use...

D&D 5E Need help figuring out the crunch behind this zombie siege

I'm writing a free adventure module and I'm stuck on a Chapter that involves a zombie siege. The setup is this: The PCs (level 2/3)are in a town (population 1,000) when they hear from newly arrived refugees that a horde of undead are rampaging through the countryside and are heading this way...

D&D 5E Spells that turned out to be a lot more powerful than you thought

Thunderwave. Grappled? Thunderwave. Enemies on the edge of a cliff? Thunderwave. Invisible assassin in a small room with you? Thunderwave. Need to alert your allies with a loud noise? Thunderwave. Thunderwave? Thunderwave.

D&D 5E Why do we award Encounter XP instead of Adjusted XP?

I can definitely understand that argument, BoldItalic. I guess simplicity wins out here despite my issues with equal challenge encounters awarding different XP. Welp, time to change all my carefully laid out milestone-per-chapter for my adventure :(

D&D 5E Why do we award Encounter XP instead of Adjusted XP?

Wow, seriously? I still can't wrap my head around that idea being a legitimate concern. Thank you for sharing that though.

D&D 5E Why do we award Encounter XP instead of Adjusted XP?

You run from room to room, "aggro" the goblins, "kite" them into a small area and then AOE them down? Maybe if the goblins were mindless zombies, sure. But goblins with half a brain aren't going to react like this. A DM isn't going to follow some computer script and say "whelp, this is exactly...

D&D 5E Why do we award Encounter XP instead of Adjusted XP?

I've never heard that before. Do you have a source?

D&D 5E Why do we award Encounter XP instead of Adjusted XP?

That's something I hadn't considered. Very interesting. Thank you for that! If this was the intent, which sounds plausible to me, I can understand it but disagree with it. I feel like the problem of being awarded less XP for multiple creatures of equal challenge is more common and higher...

D&D 5E Why do we award Encounter XP instead of Adjusted XP?

The Encounter XP for the goblins is actually lower than the Githyanki, 350 vs. 700. That's my problem: the PCs are being awarded less XP for fighting an encounter that's supposed to be equally challenging.

D&D 5E Why do we award Encounter XP instead of Adjusted XP?

I've tried asking Mike Mearls and Jeremy Crawford this question on Twitter but no response. I want to know their intent behind this, because I have no clue why it's done this way: A party of four level 2 characters are fighting five Goblins being led by one Hobgoblin. Encounter XP Total: 350...

D&D 5E Spells with attack rolls, do you avoid them?

After playing a pewpew sorcerer for 7 levels, yes, I try to avoid them. Scorching Ray has never loved me. I don't recall ever hitting with all 3 rays, and such a lack of spell efficiency makes me angry and resentful at my beautiful orange dice. Using a precious spell slot to hit with 1-2 rays...

D&D 5E Rating the 1st level Wizard Spells

Agree with most. Disagree about burning hands and thunderwave. Both are great against low hp mooks. They take damage even if they save, so it's great at guaranteeing a kill on a nearly dead enemy where otherwise you might miss and give them another round to attack. Cast it when there are 3...
