Response from wotc: Kensi signature weapons break VoPoverty

From a roleplay angle, it makes perfect sense for a weapon to break the vow of poverty - the Vow is all about not being attached to physical items, while the signature weapon ability is, well...all about being attached to a physical item. The monk enhancing himself breaking the vow can't...

What details do you miss from older editions?

The potion miscibility table. DMG appendixes about the magical properties of herbs and gems. The crazy encounter subtables... ...and not knowing what they meant. "Look, it's a slovenly trull!" "Kill it!" J

    When is LA worth it?

First: The LA buying off rules are in UA (Unearthed Arcana from WOTC), not AU (Arcana Unearthed from Malhavoc). Second: Is there really any reason for this restriction: Seems to me that if you waited, you'd just wind up paying more XP for the same effect. Would there be a benefit to...

    [May] What are you reading?

Finally getting around to Wolves of the Calla by Steven King. Mmm, Dark Tower. J

    Doom Striders

Well, some things to keep in mind - not all Doom Striders are Colossal - they come in every size from medium on up. And as trance pointed out, the suckers are tough. Secondly, if you ever watch the anime Escaflowne, you'll see a high-level fighter taking on a mecha without the benefit of his...

    The HERO System

Well, it definitely destroys GURPS, but IMO Mutants & Masterminds gives it an exceptionally strong run for its money - it's got a similar level of flexibility in terms of what you can do with powers, and has the advantage of being a lot faster to run, at least from my brief experience with M&M...

Have you ever broken apart a normal magic item?

If you really want to upse the PCs, have them find another gauntlet of ogre power...for the same hand. That brings up a related issue: Could a one-armed man wear that single gauntlet and get the strength bonus? I'd be inclined to say 'yes', as his 'glove' slot is completely filled with...

    Doom Striders

The PCs facing the Doomstrider can basically treat it as a creature of the appropriate size, and do anything they'd want or be able to do to such a creature (well, with the exception of certain spells that won't work because it's essentially a construct). Because of the way they're set up...

Rifts to Mutants and Masterminds Conversion--How well would it work?

It'd be terrible! You wouldn't have any of the RIFTS feel - the mix of demigod in the same party as a street rat...unless you rolled 1d20 for the PL of the character... More seriously, I think it'd work, as long as you didn't get too hung up on exact conversions of things like MDC capacity...

    How do you run skirmishes?

I have two methods, generally: 1) fake it. This is the fast way - the PCs deal with a certain subset of the monsters, while the rest of the forces handle the others. Advantages: easy to change the difficulty of the encounter 'on the fly' by having more forces from one side or the other...

    Munchkin arrow makin'

Why would they be any better than thrown weapons? Or were you letting a single casting of the spell be stored in all 50 arrows? J

    Munchkin arrow makin'

Yeah, it kind of degenerated into an argument over the word 'weild'. I'll sum up: Camarath thinks that you weild a weapon up until the point where it hits the foe, and thus can choose to have the spell storing go off even though you're not touching it. I think you weild a weapon until...

    Simulacrum?

The duplicate has intelligence, wisdom, and charisma equal to its original. If it could not act under its own volition (like, say, a golem) it would lack one or more of these stats. However, the simulacrum would still be compelled to follow any orders that the mage had given it before death. J

Yep, that's the one I meant.

    Is thieves' cant in 3/3.5?

In earlier editions (1e, anyway), "thieves' cant" was a special language that (IIRC) could only be learned by members of the thief class, much like Druidic and Druids. Its primary purpose was to let members of the thieves' guild talk about robberies without sounding like they were talking about...

    Doom Striders

Sounds like we need Doomstriders II, with flying mecha, transforming mecha (a la Escaflowne), mecha bays (for use with Airships) and anything else you can fit in. ;) J

    Munchkin arrow makin'

Oh, this again. Cue the argument over whether you can activate spell storing at range. Regarding the Aurorum material: if it specifically says that you can repair magic items with this, then I would let you repair arrows which missed and rolled poorly on the 50% break chance. Arrows that...

You can't go back. Or can you?

Er. Are you sure your DM read that right? 'cos in the modules I've got, there's a 500 gp reward for the party... J

You can't go back. Or can you?

I doubt I could handle Keep on the Borderlands. All those various humanoid races squished together in such a small space? The easiest way to root them out should be to wait for them to kill each other. The Saltmarsh modules, OTOH, seem to hold up fairly well. J

    Mystic Theurge

Heirophant doesn't increase your caster level at all, so spell power is utterly pointless for them - you might as well take straight cleric levels and get both the +1 caster level and the boost in spells per day. J
