    Goodman Games solicits input

Is it? That's a perennial question, and really the only reason that any prognostication on the RPG marketing lasts more than a few posts. Goodman himself doesn't believe 4E has sold as well as 3E did, comparatively, and the number of players is uncertain. It begs the question: why would he...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

To discourage combat as the solution to everything. When the mechanism for gaining levels is getting the loot out intact, rather than building a body count, players get very crafty and innovative.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

Some DMs ruled that XP was only received when the treasure was spent, giving the players a choice between having a treasury or having levels.

    Why the need for confession?

I think the confessions are largely an obligation of group membership. If you're part of any community that celebrates a particular "thing", there's an expectation that you'll give a decent reason for dropping out. Pretty much all the confessions these days are about 4E, AFAICT. Since this...

Are the Retro Clones doing well?

Alternatively, you can download the originals.

    Goodman Games solicits input

Possibly. But given his habit of making lofty and condescending statements about the industry, he has a lot of face to save. Or maybe we should just go with it,

Are the Retro Clones doing well?

I think the "clone " part of the definition is becoming outdated. The genuine clones are now being joined by "new old school" games like X-Plorers, which take the rules-light, player-skill-focus of retro games and apply it to new systems.

Are the Retro Clones doing well?

It's hard to say how well they're doing, as a group. I think Matt Finch discloses the number of downloads of Swords & Wizardry (can't find it right now), but downloads don't equal players. There's some excitement about the upcoming release of the White Box, but whether Brave Halfling will...

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

Regarding the "it's just nostalgia" idea, I like Philotomy's comments: There's certainly a nostalgia factor in wanting to try old editions, but the fact is that a lot of people are also having as much fun with them as the did "back in the day".

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

3E characters are definitely powered up a notch compared to previous editions, but IME it's possible to change the setting around them so that their power, relatively, is as low or high as the game group wants it. The rigidity of 4E doesn't permit that option. The PCs are vastly superior to...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

That's just it. I think a lot of experienced D&Ders dismissed 4E for what it was, but remember that many of us gave it a good go first. I ran a short campaign, then played in another, and I know from that experience that 4E simply cannot provide the type of game I enjoy. The reasons for that...

WotC Layoffs - Rob Heinsoo, Logan Bonner, and Chris Sims

That's great for you. Just realise that if the largest segment of the market wants to play F.A.T.A.L combined with Monopoly, then that's what D&D will become, regardless of history or vision. What you like won't matter a fig. That's precisely what they said. The RPG industry is composed of...

WotC Layoffs - Rob Heinsoo, Logan Bonner, and Chris Sims

They can lay people off. They'll just be regarded as soulless profiteers. Small companies are in it for the love of the hobby. No-one ever said, "Hey! I want to be rich. Let's cash in and start a tiny RPG publishing business!". Global corporations like Hasbro, though, are in it for the...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

You think 4chan did this? After Rickrolling MTV and trolling Oprah like pros, would /tg/ bother messing with a poll on ENworld? I may have recently donned a Guy Fawkes mask to protest against a certain sci-fi church, and if I did (for, lo, that church is litigious) I can tell you that this is...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

Nope. I haven't said a thing about 3E fans vs 4E fans, because it's not relevant. "Some 3E fans hate on 4E" is categorically not an answer to the question "why would someone artificially boost 4E's popularity in a poll?". As for the theory that it's revenge against the "haters", that begs...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

I haven't commented on whether a group of fans is better than another, only that some 4E fans are obviously anxious about the game's popularity - anxious enough to go to pains in sabotaging a poll on a website which will be read by a only handful of people and probably influence none. Make of...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

They'd count, but I doubt it's them fudging this poll. You could almost understand 3E fans tinkering with polls. Everyone likes to have their taste validated by popular opinion, so declining preference for 3E must sting. But why would players of the world's premier, best-known RPG feel the...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

Well, overwrought fans freaking out because they're worried their favourite game isn't as popular as they thought hardly counts as a "big conspiracy", and why on earth would I consider poll rigging on a popular forum "ultra serious business"? It's entertaining, informative and notable, but the...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

I was wondering that myself. I presume someone's run up a program to do it automatically, but we can't discount the possibility that fans are out there laboriously making the posts manually. In any case, it makes clear that segments of the fanbase are very insecure about the game's quality...
