re: rich baker's dark sun chat on 12/14

Very interesting - i really think that the 4e rules could be the best ever for playing DS. I´d just reread my old box and stuff like "at level 6 you know how to build siege equipment" gave me the willies. And that defiling table... I just hope stuff like water / metal scarcity, survival etc...

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

But higher level wizards ruled exploration too with knock/fly etc. I know at what you´re getting at here, but i don´t think that the first few "glass jaw" levels of spellcasters made up for their ever-increasing flexibility, inside AND outside of combat. I´ve always thought that you could...

3E & 4E Love and Hate Polls - What does it mean?

... what? Oh, sorry. That was a reflexive action. I always post that when someone is speaking about soda.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

What this thread shows is that there are broad, deep channels separating old-school and new-school concepts and approaches. Somehow i have to wonder, though, if they are already there (and only identified and described in threads like this), or if some people are constantly shovelling them...

    I Want More Adventure Tools!

It´s even better if you use Onenote for your conversions because a) you screengrab the statblock out of the compendium as a picture b) paste relevant pictures beside it/above/below (no word processor-esque positioning problems for pics - throw it where you want it) c) write your text...

    A 4e "fix" book...

Oh, i don´t want to dismiss them - if they would say that, they would be right. After all, this is the core question every game has to ask itself: do we think that the designers/authors can create "better" houserules than the DMs? And what happens to the system if we publish them in a book...

    A 4e "fix" book...

Cue chorus of old-schoolers chastising you with "why don´t you create your houserules yourself as Gary intended!!1." You can silence them by pointing at AU/UA. Please answer the following two questions: a) How is a longer skill list a fix and b) How does a longer skill list lead to more...

    Revisionist game publishing

I hate to do that, but.. this. The mistake here (if you can call that) was to include only the Dragon version and not also the MM version of the minotaur in the Charbuilder - but i already suspected that they wouldn´t add both.

Was AD&D1 designed for game balance?

I voted "other" and wait eagerly for the sister poll "was the Complete Book of Elves the best-balanced product for D&D ever?"

    Updated Dragon PDFs

I really could make a post in reaction to this one that contributed to the thread, but i consciously choose not to. Ha!

converting old D&D Modules into 4th edition like Desert of Desolation.

However, you could just take a look at the awesome work of Mrs. Frost here who has converted DL 1 to 4e - using lots of problematic artwork and !so far! without problems. Tread lightly, and all could be well. And sorry: but that cover is just too badass not to be used.

WotC Layoffs - Rob Heinsoo, Logan Bonner, and Chris Sims

I´m interested in that. Can you name two or three game companies that let staff go, and how the reasons were more transparent than at Wotc?

Dragon 382 - Ampersand: Looking Back

... but not everybody is into piracy, so those who want to stay on the right side of the law get exclusive previews. Or were you just talking about threads like this?

WotC Layoffs - Rob Heinsoo, Logan Bonner, and Chris Sims

Cool tribute, Windjammer! A "what they contributed to D&D" webpage would actually be a cool idea, me thinks.

WotC Layoffs - Rob Heinsoo, Logan Bonner, and Chris Sims

Condolences to all who were let go. Man, these threads really get to me. The mass-appreciation and well-wishing of the community is nice, but there are a lot of knives coming out of pockets who had been sharpened long before the Christmas layoffs. Either way, this sucks.

Dragon 382 - Ampersand: Looking Back

I was absolutely uninterested in Hammerfast, because a) i thought they would do a "traditional dwarfhold, only in POLand" and b) because i felt no pressing need to add a dwarfhold to my campaign. This however? Sold 20 times. That´s city-built-on-top-of-the-Tarrasque-stlye awesomeness.

What editions are preferred by people who vote in polls?

Okay, recently this thread stirred up a lot of stew. But it also made me curious: how many people who vote in polls about 3e or 4e are playing those editions, respectively? And how many people who play 3e or 4e never vote in polls? Really interested how the poll will turn out.

    Wotc takes on ... Optimization?!?

Which makes it pretty awesome. And with Penny Arcade-Style art to boot! I´ve been waiting for a book like this - too often, D&D is taken too seriously. BTW, i hope it doesn´t offend anybody if i say that some of the negative posts in this thread taste like sweet nectar. ;)

    Why aren't RPGs poplular

RPGs are immensely popular. They are an incredibly cheap hobby compared to other. The personal buy-in, of course is big: you have to be interested in rolling dice, talking to people, telling stories, thinking about characters, counting and managing numbers and being creative in your sparetime...
